I tried Mike A.D.'s method, but it just downloads as a .ram file.  Any ideas?

Found this app for mac: http://www.bitcartel.com/irecordmusic/

Only problem is that it records in real time so you have to stream the whole thing to save it to the hard drive. There has to be a way to download the file straight from the stream source.

You can't download full shows anywhere, but you can get a plethora of clips at bestshowvault.blogspot.com.

Great site.  Too bad it isn't being updated anymore.  This got me to buy a premium rapidshare account.

The Vault had to DIE in order to make room in the COSMOS for BEST SHOW GEMS.

You don't need to do that, there is a much simpler way that allows you to directly download the mp3 from the site. It only works for the recent archived episodes, the ones that are available in mp3 format still.

I used to have a program for windows that allowed you to download streaming ram archives, but I forgot what it's called. If I wasn't busy with school right now I'd go searching for it. I used to download BBC radio one shows with it, though I find that ram files are horrible quality.

I have used Net Transport in the past to download ram streams, then converted to mp3. I think Net Transport is not free anymore, but you can get the older version somewhere.

ah, they changed how the flash player works so you can't download the mp3 stream directly anymore :(

If you use Firefox, the M3U Ripper add-on will help immensely with downloading the archives that still exist in mp3 format.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3023

You have to use the "experimental version" (1.6) if you're on Firefox 3.0. From there, you right click on the mp3 link, choose "rip playlist contents," and away you go.

Edit: This probably goes without saying, but if you're downloading stuff or making heavy use of WFMU's incredibly generous archives in any way, you need to be pledging during the marathon. Or whenever you have some extra cash burning a hole in your pocket. I know times are tough, but the station fell pretty far short of its fundraising goal this year. Since they run such a tight ship, something's going to have to be sacrificed to plug those holes. I hope it's not the archives. If you have any extra money throughout the year, send a pledge. They'll take your money at any time.

Sorry to get on a soapbox, but I was pretty disappointed that the station missed the goal this year.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.
