Neil Young Archives
« on: June 06, 2009, 02:12:41 PM »
Anybody take the plunge? I got the DVDs, and have found the disc navigation to be annoying at best.

There's some great stuff, though, including a weird home video of Neil going to a record store and getting into it with a clerk about a bootleg record in the late 1960s.

I was considering it. But the period that I'm most interested in is between 1973-1981, which will comprise Volume 2 of the Archives. That includes The Ditch Trilogy, Zuma, Chrome Dreams, Homegrown, etc. That box set I will definitely get.

BTW, when will Neil finally re-release Time Fades Away?

I wanted to bring this back up because I am seriously considering getting this. Neil is an alltime favorite and now that I have secured a steady paycheck I think I'm gunna take the plunge.

Things I am asking:
Did anyone buy it?
I'd get the blu-ray set. Is it easily accessible?
How is that download card? Do they update the tracks that are available for download?
Tom, do you like it any more than when you first bought it?
And finally, is it worth $200?

I appreciate it.

Fuck it, I'll bite.

I bought it.  It would have made a TREMENDOUS 3 disc set--pretty much the greatest treasure-trove, in the form of a 3 disc set.  I really, really like the early years (disc one)--full of little lyrical and musical tidbits that would show up much later.

I could cull, oh, I'd say another disc's worth of songs together for another disc--things you've yet heard, interesting renditions of songs that would appear later, that sort of thing.  Many of these songs appeared on an early bootleg tape (or three tape collection) from the 90's.  I can't remember the name, but it had all of this stuff and a lot more.  Why they didn't just release that is beyond me.  One song, "War Song", is ALMOST a great song.  Marred by some meandering bologna, but it almost gets there.

The already released live set from Filmore is incredible, and I'll assume you've heard that already.  If not, and if you want all the pretty pictures and whatnot, go for it.  I bought the cd version (blu-ray is the new 8-track), as I'd like to actually listen to the thing.

There's no way I WASN'T going to buy it.  But, after the initial shock of actually having it, after waiting for so many years, I'd say it's a not at all essential.

Through itunes you could easily put together a great set of songs.

When will they finally release Toast?  RIGHT?!?!
Well it's been a long time since I've had my favorite drink

Thanks for responding. The blu-ray reviews on amazon get me so pumped. My only doubt was, like Tom had said, that I'd have to play the bluray to hear the songs. But the download card that lets me download all the mp3 files seems like a good solution. Can't wait til after xmas. Thanks.

The Massey Hall and Filmore discs are incredible individually.  I saw the Blu-Ray of Archives on Amazon for $209.  A nice drop from the $349 list price but then again that's still a pretty hefty price tag.  Neil's an expensive guy to be a fan of.  Definitely sounds like it's worth it if you have an extra $209, though.
