So. Searching for "Community" wasn't easy, but I lived and will assume this is the only related thread. I just finished the season 1 dvd and am kind of blown away at how a show that started as faintly amusing, but also annoyingly self-aware, flourished this much over the course of its first season to end so brilliantly. The first sign of greatness was the amazingly odd school mascot, but the chicken fingers and paintball episodes late in the season are two of the most ambitious and well-executed genre parodies I've seen on tv maybe ever. I generally don't even care about parodies, mainly because they're rarely so inspired. I mean, in my opinion those episodes crush that dated stuff in Spaced, for example. I'm almost worried about catching up with season 2 now in case its not up to snuff (probably unfounded... I hope)
It bums me out that this show is probably heading toward cancellation but it's too good not to eventually develop the Arrested Development-sized cult following it deserves. The fact that Donald Glover is obviously going to be a star won't hurt its chances.
Also, Ken Jeong started as an awful weak link but ended up providing what I thought was the greatest moment of the series in the paintball episode.
