I can go on the Megabus for 88 bucks round trip. I need to figure out what to do, where to stay, and most importantly, how to get to the station without getting myself killed.

Any suggestions?

Check Orbitz.com for hotels, search "lowest price" first.  It starts with outside NYC, then moves into NYC. I think this is the hardest step, finding an affordable place to stay.  Closer to your arrival date you may find  better, but very last minute deals.  Also go to the timeoutnewyork.com site for a million things to do and see.  Try posting in the Trading Post section and see if any local FOTs can help or accommodate you. NYC is a pretty safe place these days, just don't stop and talk to people who walk right up to you and try to shake your hand and pretend they know you from somewhere, which seems to happen around the stations.

One idea: maybe look into apartment swaps or sublets? It might be harder finding somebody who wants to swap for Knoxville (nothing against your lovely town, Dave, just that fewer New Yorkers are likely to be taking trips there than, say, LA, Tokyo, or Buenos Aires) but many people leave town in July/August and need subletters. I can keep my eye peeled on the parents' listserv for my neighborhood if you send me your email address.

As for my recommendations, in no particular order: MoMA, PS1, The High Line, Coney Island, The Cloisters, walking across any of the bridges, The Met, The Museum of Natural History, Film Forum, PS122, Central Park, The Brooklyn Museum, The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, The Bronx Zoo, Roosevelt Island, WFMU, Governor's Island, Red Hook, The Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Chinatown, Indian food in Jackson Heights, Chinese food in Flushing, Mexican food in Sunset Park, Carribean food in Midwood, record shopping in Williamsburg/Greenpoint.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Dead in the water. I am too terrified. My back is bothering me. I really can't afford it. And the only reason I want to go is to see the Best Show done live, and that seems kind of creepy even to me. And not only can I not assume the show is happening this week,  I can't even assume Tom would be comfortable having me in.

So I guess I am done.

Well, a bus ride would be really hard on a sore back.  I don't think wanting to visit the show in action is creepy at all.  Tom, on air, finally granted Julie from Cincinnati's long standing request to visit.  I'd think you'd have a shot too, if you'd ask him, and if the timing worked out.  Traveling can be stressful and rewarding, as well as expensive, and it does take a lot of planning.  I hope the trip works out for you, if not now, then in the future.

Round-trip flights from Nashville to LaGuardia on, say, 8/22-8/24 (Mon-Wed) are only about $200.  If you needed an air mattress I could try to hook you up. I live in LES Manhattan, just about 30-40 minutes from Jersey City by train.

Terrified?

If my family and I survived the Fung Wah bus (Boston-NY), you could survive a trip! (Google Fung Wah and you'll see what I mean).

Also, check out priceline.com they had quite good deals on hotels (for NY).
