I don't know if any of you have had good or bad experiences with buying records through the vendors on discogs.com  All of them seem to be based in germany.  How did all of these records from us labels end up over there?

thanks!

I have dealt with gentlemen from the UK and France on discogs, and they were fine gents indeed.  I can't speak for the German vendors, although I suspect that they are all jerks.

The book "Retromania" deals with this briefly. There are a lot of collectors there.

First of all, I love the discogs marketplace. It's pretty much perfect for someone like me who is looking for very specific releases and don't really have a lot of local record stores to rely on. The only real downside is the PayPal fees usually added by the sellers (not their fault obviously). I live in Sweden, and I love ordering stuff from Germans. Not only is the Deutsche Post rates very affordable, but many German record collectors / record shops keep their records in excellent condition. And depending on the records you're looking for, and how anal you are about getting specific editions, you can get a lot of cheap copies from Germany because many many US/UK records over the years have been pressed in separate German editions. It is/was a huge market. Same goes for Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, and so on.

But I've also ordered records with great success from serious collectors in Belgium, Holland, Italy, England, the Czech Republic and Austria. Nothing from the US yet. Shipping rates and so on. It's fun in a very nerdy way to browse and notice subtle differences between sellers from different countries (not to mention the 'story' behind the collection that's being sold -- raided fleamarket, old DJ, small record shop, etc).

I would buy on Discogs if I could trust people's judgement on what a record's grade is. I've bought one record on ebay and one on discogs and both were well below the VG grade that was advertised. With most return policies being "shipper pays return postage" it's just not worth it. It sucks because Discogs sellers always price things at book value since they have to compete. I can always find good stuff in the the Twin Cities area but it's hit and miss if it's going to be at a fair price. Record shows are still the best option to find great records at a good price around here.

I used discogs a lot too but have never made any overseas purchases. I also use amazon used quite often and a lot of times you can find really good deals. I always look for Like New postings or Very Good posting where the user clarifies that the item is VG+ or NM. NM is always a great thing to see.

Gilly below VG makes me nervous in any case - obviously it's the obscurity / availability trade off though.  Wouldn't those vendors reviews dip?

Last night I got an order for a Pavement 7" I had up for sale on Discogs. The name of the person who ordered it was Robert Pollard.  Amazing.

Well done, sir!

I've ordered several things off of Discogs. I've found that overseas dealers are much more on the ball about shipping items more quickly. I can order records from a US and a UK dealer on the same day and the record from the UK will arrive first 60-70% of the time.

Musicstack is another online music marketplace similar to Discogs. It doesn't have the wealth of info that Discogs has but I like it's search engine better. I almost always check both sites before buying a particular record. Gemm is the other music marketplace I'm aware of. I've never ordered anything through it. I'm not too crazy about its search function.

Best discogs message ever?

"I was wondering if you would be willing to trade for this Young Widows record? I live in New Jersey and I returned from Cuba about 4 months ago and brought back a good amount of Cohiba cigars; they have been sitting in my humidor at 72 RH. Please let me know if you are a cigar aficionado and would be interested in trading for cigars and we can work something out; I can also send you photos of the cigars. I have experience with properly shipping cigars and I will include a Boveda Humidifier pack at 72%."
