Whatever happened to...
« on: December 03, 2015, 03:48:41 PM »
Anybody ever wonder what happens to these regular callers who just suddenly drop off the planet? Laurie from Miami used to call in every week... I don't think we've heard from her in years. Larry Da Perv? Trembling Eagle?

I was kind of wondering about Laurie myself actually.

Larry's called into the new show at least once, maybe more?

As for Trembling Eagle, who cares

Laurie called in during a televised S&W interview last year. I don't think she's called in much since the regular caller ban several years ago.

I think Larry did call in once. Spike called in once. The regular callers come and go, except for the ones who don't go. Yet.

I wasn't really asking about any of those callers specifically. Just commenting on the phenomenon. It seems strange to me that these people make The Best Show a major part of their life then suddenly... Stop. I was seriously starting to wonder about both Julie from Cincinnati and the dude from Mit Hamine and they've each called in within a few weeks of each other.

Keep wondering; it seems to be working.

i always saw it as part of what makes them great callers. they know how to not wear out their welcome. (there are a few exceptions of course).

leave the audience wanting more....

I know I am no Laurie or Larry. Or Trembling Eagle (thank the gods), but I was a very regular caller from about 2007-2012. If anyone else's trajectory is like mine:

    • I still listen religiously.
    • I don't want to wear out my welcome so I slowed it way down, becoming much tougher on myself about when I really have something to share.
    • The decision was partly made for me: Getting through to the new show is way, way harder than it was on WFMU.

I can second "Getting through to the new show is way, way harder than it was on WFMU." I have called multiple times after the show started and have never gotten to Mike, just a busy signal. The only way in now is to call at the beginning and sit in queue.

But Best Show 2.0 has given us Bebe in Las Vegas, an all-time caller already.

i remember bebe calling in the old show, too.  she called in on this episode, im pretty sure.    July 24, 2012: Terry calls in from Woodstock by way of outer space. Topic: 'Perfect Storms.' More on ‘Staten Island Garbage Rats.’ Tom’s still losing his marbles over ‘The Wall.' ‘CPO Scharpling!’ What if America was a Golden Corral? Plus, Gary's 'List Of Fools!

Hearing "This is...?" "Laurie.." *in unison* "...from Miami." is a pleasure in revisiting old episodes.

The most recent Goddam Dave Hill show had on two callers best show fans might find horrible/interesting.

"December 21, 2015: It's just a few days before Dave gets all the presents he has ever wanted probably as comedian Lukas Kaiser makes his triumphant return to the program. Also, country outlaw Wheeler Walker, Jr. calls in and tells it like it is."

Missing from this synopsis is , "O'neill from Orlando tells Dave that Tom said he was the worst caller ever and asks Dave if he is the worst caller ever and The guy from the Boiler Room at Rutgers who Tom thought was an inmate/truck driver talks about the perils of stage-diving at Dickies shows when you weigh 210"
