Should I drive four hours to see Jonathan Richman?
« on: February 25, 2008, 12:25:59 AM »
I'm in Fayetteville, AR, and Jonathan Richman is playing tomorrow night in Norman, OK, which at least 3.5 hours away. I have a ticket, which cost $10. However, driving there and back would be very expensive for a poor college student such as myself. Since the ticket was pretty cheap, should I just forget about it and save some money, or should I go anyway?

It should be noted that I would be going alone, because I have stupid friends. Also, I'm a loser. I don't have anyone depending on me for a ride, so it's completely my decision, which I now outsource to youse guys. What say you?

EDIT: It's also worth mentioning that this trip wouldn't affect my class attendance in any way. My last class tomorrow ends at 11:30 and my earliest class Tuesday starts at 2:00.

Jonathan Richman is a legend and if you don't go you'll regret it for the rest of your life.
Don't wind up like someone who calls into Tom with regrets about not going.
If that doesn't convince you here's a video I shot of Richman in NYC. Enjoy

I had the same choice (without a ticket) a few years ago when I was going to school in outstate MN and it was a 3 hour drive to Minneapolis. I didn't go.

I saw him many many many years ago (Club Babyhead). It was nice to see since he was just solo and performed songs that went really far back. But a three hour drive, unless he will be taking requests the whole time I'd pass.

Hey, man, I'm right here!
I just did that the one time.

My vote is yes.  I'm going!  When are you going to have the chance to see Jonathan Richman in an intimate venue like Opolis again?

[Edited because I can't read, apparently.]

I'm leaning towards going, because what the hell else am I gonna do tonight? Read Confessions of an English Opium-Eater? Thanks but no thanks! Also, it might be kinda fun to just go on a long drive and reflect on my life and shit.

I'm still not 100% sure I'm going, but I probably will. Watch out for me, Sascha! I'll be the good-lookin' white dude.

But if I drive all the way over there and he doesn't play "There's Something About Mary", I am gonna be cheesed.

Did you go? Did he play the entirety of Jonathan Goes Country? Because if I drove 3 1/2 hours I'd expect to hear that underrated classic IN FULL.

I did go, and I had a good time. Nothing from Jonathan Goes Country, though.

I had a great time, but I can't stop focusing of the negatives of the performance. For instance, he only played one song off the first Modern Lovers record. Normally, that wouldn't bother me, but he played - in my opinion - the worst song on that record, "Old World". He began "Affection", but he only sang/spoke the first half of the first verse, and didn't play the rest. He played "That Summer Feeling", but sang only three verses of it, as opposed to the 685 verses on I, Jonathan. He kept dicking around on guitar, which I also wouldn't normally mind, but he did it so much that he could've used that time to play at least six more songs.

But the good points: Jonathan's a great, inventive guitar player (if sometimes a little repetitive), and Tommy Larkins is a great drummer. Their set had a very suite-like feel to it, which I enjoyed. Jonathan talking trash about cell phones! "Egyptian Reggae"! A 17-minute (I'm guessing) version of "Here Come the Martian Martians" that mentioned Madonna and Justin Timberlake! Hearing a guy in front of me say to his friend, "Man, that's deep" during "Not So Much to Be Loved as to Love"! There couldn't have been more than fifty people there, and seeing Jonathan in such a small place was really fun. Also, the wind outside was INSANE, so having some kind of shelter for 90 minutes was a plus.

Old World is my favorite off that record.

Old World is my favorite off that record.

I guess it speaks to the quality of that record that I could consider that the worst song on there; it's still a fine song. "Hospital" and "Modern World" might be my favorites. If we include the bonus tracks from the reissues, then "Government Center" and "I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms" are up there too.
