Matthew Barney doesn't care about man.  He cares about the superman.  Or something.

He funds all his projects through Barbara Gladstone gallery.  His projects are relatively inexpensive compared to feature films.  Cremaster 4 was a pretty low budget video that he made when laser disks were the preferred way to sell art video.  He would sell the videos in handmade vitrines for hundreds of thousands of dollars (don't quote me on this), and each project got progressively more expensive as each project's videos, sculptures-related-to-videos, and props caught more money on the art market.  But Barbara Gladstone is basically Matthew Barney's patron.

I've heard that that's one of the reasons he won't release the full cycle on DVD - allegedly, he still rakes in cash from fancypants collectors from those copies and from private screenings. There was supposedly plans on releasing the whole thing on DVD, but maybe pressure from the people who payed gazillions of dollars for it forced him to cancel those plans. (Maybe it's back on the table, I'm not fully updated.)

(But yeah, don't quote me.)

He also makes a killing on his works on paper and all sorts of Cremaster-related gear (photos, etc). He's like Yogurt in Spaceballs, but with no sense of humor. (Still waiting for Cremaster: The Flamethrower).

I'll always love the time when I went to see Drawing Restraint 9 with my friend (a Barney super fan) who promptly fell asleep. "Petroleum jelly oozes out of stuff? Got it. Zzzzzzzz"
