Really? I'm going to guess that you think Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying isn't a standout on Sinister then?

i'm a life pursuit apologist.

but '...sinister' is still their apex, of course.

dylan in the movies! fox in the snow! judy and the dream of horses!

also, related hot streak (from the same city) - the delgados. peleton/the great eastern/hate. three f'kin incredible records.
slightly less so - arab strap. two amazing records, but there were two less-than-stellar ones in between.

oh, get me started about glasgow indie...

That's a great list, Dave!  All I can say is that none of them (except Tom Waits) had to deal with that giant wall know as the eighties.
Fresh fruit enriches everyone.  Takes the thirst out of everyday time.  A pure whiff of oxygen, painting over a monochrome world in primary colors.  We all know that.  It's why everyone loves fruit.

Drunk Tank- not so much a time
George St.- I'm havin' a time
Brenda- I'm havin' a time
Bingo- I'm havin' a time
House Arrest- I'm still havin' a time

I'm one of the biggest Elliott Smith fans out there but From a Basement was awful.

You'd guess right.  That song's embarrassing.  You get Bona Drag by Morrissey if you want that kind of thing.

i'm a life pursuit apologist.

There's no need to be an apologist for a great album.  DCW, on the other hand, is one of their weakest (in my opinion).

I guess I should have tagged it as "ongoing hot streaks". Belle and Sebastian below the top of their game still outpaces most of the bands going. At the risk of heresy, I really like Dear Catastrophe Waitress a lot.

Personally, I think Fold Your Hands Child You Walk Like a Peasant is B&S's nadir. That album is a mess. After Stuart David left the band, they suffered.  Dear Catastrophe Waitress redefined their sound, but it definitely wasn't "classic" Belle and Sebastian.

They suffered after Isobel left, as well.

I have this theory about bands losing it after their original bassist leaves, but the only examples I can think of off the top of my head are B&S and Weezer.

The Sex Pistols?
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Dear Catastrophe Waitress is my favorite B&S album after If You're Feeling Sinister.  I like the new, more polished sound as much as the old sound.  I think they're on a definite hot streak.

Their low point was Arab Strap.  I hated that album so much that I lost interest in them for a while-- I didn't even bother listening to Fold Your Hands for a while after it came out, and I thought it was bad, too.  I like that period a bit more than I did at the time now, mostly because I thought Dear Catastrophe Waitress was so awesome it forced me to reevaluate them.

I think I agree with all of that. Except the hot streak part because I didn't like Life Pursuit. Maybe I'm not as big of a B+S fan as I thought I was.
