Recipients of honorary doctorates/degrees
« on: July 03, 2008, 08:46:50 AM »
In 2001, George W. Bush received an honorary degree from Yale University where he had earned his bachelor's degree in history in 1968.

Hunter S. Thompson, journalist and creator of Gonzo Journalism, received an honorary doctorate from the Universal Life Church in the late 1960s.  Thompson often insisted on the title, as well as his alter ego Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas who claimed to be a "Doctor of Journalism".

Billy Graham is regularly addressed as Dr. Graham, though his highest earned degree is a BA in anthropology from Wheaton College. He holds 20 honorary doctorates and has turned down nearly twice as many.

That probably is true. I'm sure he collected some as Vice Pres in the 80s, then during his presidency and continues to do commencement speeches today.

The one that always surprises me is Chris Matthews. In that NY Times Magazine profile on him this spring, he talked about having like 20+. I could understand Tim Russert or Brokaw but Matthews?
