NBA (and complimentary Nets tickets)
« on: January 08, 2009, 05:10:37 PM »
I know Tom has rightfully called basketball the best sport before in the past and wondered if anybody here is following the NBA this season.

Also, I'm not from the NYC/NJ area so I'm unfamiliar with the distance between East Rutherford and the Jersey City area, but I saw this link from Ticketmaster for free complimentary tickets to several Nets games this season:

http://www.ticketmaster.com/promo/bypbj7?brand=tm&camefrom=CFC_BUYAT_fatwallet

I know the Nets aren't that great this year (and neither are those teams they're playing) but Devin Harris is playing well and it could be good fun for all.

wow, that's a great find! I'm debating for really good seats against the blazers or floor seats against the bobcats....

It's unsurprising that for TicketMaster even free doesn't come free.  Or even particularly cheap.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

As a Bulls fan, I've really been enjoying watching Derrick Rose but I pretty much can't stand the rest of the team.  The East is so bad that they're 5 games under .500 but still only 1 game out of the 8th seed.

It's been great seeing the Celtics flounder the last couple weeks.  I can't wait to see LeBron destroy them in the playoffs.

They charge their regular fee on regularly delivered ticket.  That was what I was pointing out.

I know I won't make any friends for posting this, but I have to sort of come to Ticketmaster's defense on this. They don't make a single penny from the cost of the tickets they sell. Those fees are to cover the cost of their event programmers and customer service agents, and even a large chunk of that is rebated back to the venues and promoters. If Ticketmaster didn't exist and venues had to staff 20 plus employees to process all of their own ticket orders, the cost of putting on a major concert or sporting event would be so high that they would not be able to happen and still be profitable. Now there are companies like Live Nation that have decided to run their own ticketing, and it has turned out to be just as expensive but with more glitches. It's probably obvious that I work closely with this company, but I have an understanding of what their event programmers do, and it is highly-specialized and complicated work that doesn't come cheap. I guess I'm just saying that Ticketmaster is a necessary evil and, believe it or not, it could be much worse.

As a Celtic fan, I'm wondering what's your reason for hating them? I'm from the Boston area but can't stand most Boston sports fans. There's tons of valid reasons (hating Boston in general, hating Boston sports fanatics, or hating Kevin Garnett's dramatic intensity), but I'm always interested.

This certainly looks like it's going to be the year of Lebron. He'll get MVP, but I still don't think the Cavs will win the championship. It'd be the first time since 2004 that an NBA Champ only had one person from their team on that year's All-Star game. As it stands, the Cavs only have one player (Lebron) having an All-Star quality season. I'm going with Lakers or Spurs.

It was amazing that there were ever any concerts before TicketMaster existed.

I don't mean to tweak personal spots for Forrest or Kid Pain, and, in the interest of full disclosure, I make my living helping out an industry that makes massive profits off something that people need much more than concert tickets.  AND this is starting to be way off topic.

But I think it's disingenuous if we're going to pretend that TicketMaster doesn't take advantage of significant barriers to entry to make a large profit.

I don't think I'm really going out of my way to defend ticketmaster here. I got 4 tickets at a face value of 440 dollars combined ( before fees) for a total of 15 dollars ( i decided to print tickets as opposed to wait for will call.)

Of all the times to complain about ticketmaster (which are plenty), this seems to be the least relevant. It's like someone painting your house for free and then complaining they didn't do the trim.

Well, they didn't finish the job!  And the trim was the part I most wanted done!

My main reason is that I know several Boston fans and they're beyond annoying.  Two years ago when they tanked was great.  The Pats and Sox "failures" this year were also enjoyable.  Actually, Garnett is probably one of my favorite players (although I kinda liked him more on the Twolves) and I don't really hate anyone on their team or anything, it's purely a fan thing.
