If you think gay people act like Bruno then it is your problem that you have a fucked up view.

That's very very true, and because you do not have to spend a lot of your free time with teenage boys (or maybe you do? perhaps you work at some kind of arcade or high school or Urban Outfitters - i don't, as the kids say, know your life) you can just say that and be done with it. The rest of us teenage girls have little choice (through social or academic whatever) than to hang out with teenage boys and listen to them do "gay" voices and recite passages from the movie and then ten minutes later call each other fags. Have you ever tried telling a stupid teenage boy not to do that? I dare you to remain all unfrustrated and cool and "it's your problem"-y about it.

Most teenage boys are going to act like jerks with or without the influence of Bruno/Cohen. You can't pin that one on him!

Somebody should ask these teenage boys if their gay impersonations are self-conscious imitations meant to the expose the bigotry in others, because if they are, we can laugh at them in the same way we might laugh at Brüno.

Teenage boys' impersonations of Transformers are pretty jerky.

vulture has a nice post about the "risks" of making the film.

highlight: jumping out of a 15foot high window while cuffed to another man, while in bondage gear, to avoid the cops

But so much of the laugh quotient is tied into the fact that Bruno is super super gay, which is supposed to be inherently hilarious.

Of course there are people who will find Bruno funny just because he is super gay, but I don't think you can necessarily accuse the film of trying to MAKE its audience react this way.

If the movie was 90 minutes of nothing but SBC doing his best estimation of a gay minstrel act on an empty soundstage, then I think it would be fair to accuse the film of inviting its audience to laugh blindly at homosexuality. For many, though, the comedy of these movies comes from something entirely removed from having a crude laugh at homosexuality, or foreigners, or whatever.

I suppose so. Something about it rubs me the wrong way is all. I'll definitely give the movie a chance. I like SBC and I'd love to have my suspicions dismissed.

With SBC, it's not really the character that's funny, it's how people react to his schtick.

If you haven't seen the AliG in America episode when, in character as Bruno, he goes to a conservative Evangelical reverend's home and interviews him about what he deems "a healthy Christian lifestyle," then by all means go find it.

hint: none of Bruno's favorite activities were OK, according to the reverend.
"Is this me?"

Anyone care to weigh in now that the movie's actually released? I haven't seen it yet, as I've been embroiled in moving to a new city. Maybe this weekend, though.

I liked Bruno on the Ali G show because of stuff like this:

my youngest brother who is a mere 17-turned-18 years old thought it was disgusting.  he said it was penis jokes, non-stop.  the fact that he didnt find that funny tells me to wait for video.
