computer help?
« on: October 20, 2009, 04:14:44 PM »
hey everyone, are there any computer people out there who might be able to offer me some help?

i have a macbook pro and i'm having a problem i don't understand how to fix.

my computer won't start up. it will turn on, i can hear the inner workings moving and the light on the front turns on but it won't start up, it just stays on a black screen . i don't think it's just the screen because there's no start up sound or anything. it's like it will turn on but won't go any further and start up.

i got a new battery about a month ago after my old one completely died but it hasn't given me any problem til now so i'm not sure if it's to do with that. i tried putting the old battery back in but its still doing the same thing.

any ideas? i could really use some help. i'm kinda freaking out.

thanks

The same thing happened to my Macbook a while ago. It would turn on and make a clicking kind of sound - the screen showed the apple icon but that's it. Had to take it in to the 'genius bar' and unfortunately my hard drive was no more. They did replace it though, free of charge, even though the warranty or whatever was expired. They also replaced my touch pad and bottom part of the case for free.

The startup sound won't happen if, the last time your computer was actually on, you put it on mute. If you put your Mac on mute it stays muted when you turn it off.

You could try holding down the power button for longer than seems natural.  Also try attaching an external monitor--that's one way to find out definitely whether it's the screen.

Another screen-related thing is (really) to hold it up to a window or something so that light shines through.  Unlike CRT screens, LCD screens don't give off any light of their own; they have a backlight which can go out.  (That's, incidentally, why displaying black on an LCD actually uses up more power than displaying white--you're shining a light and then using the LCD to block it.) If the backlight has gone out you can still sort of see if the computer is booting up if you shine some light through the screen.

You probably need to take it in to an Apple store if it's not the screen.

(Also, I say this every time someone has a computer problem, but there's no reason anyone should ever lose any data to a computer problem, ever.  Big files and shit should be backed up through something like Time Machine.  Small files can instantly be backed up online through something like Dropbox.  Everyone should have everything 100% backed up always.)

When you say you hear the "inner workings," do you hear the fan? The hard drive clicking away? Both? If you do not hear the latter, it may be the motherboard. If you hear both, there is hope...

Good luck. My motherboard fried just last week due to a three-second power outage. Those three seconds are costing me mad ducats.

i don't really know how to describe the sound, it's like a whirring noise i guess, it always makes that noise when being turned on.

update: tried the holding the screen up to the light thing, nothing. definitely not the back light being out.

i put my ear to the computer after turning it on and i can hear a faint whirring noise, i think thats the harddrive the fan is alot louder.

so it must be some sort of hard drive problem unless some one can think another reason for my problem.

kittyktty: is that normal that they wouldn't charge you? that's the fear i have of bringing it to the mac store, my warrenty is expired and i totally don't have the money to pay for repairs.

Wouldn't they give you a choice before actually doing anything that costs money? I would at least go and find out what the actual problem is.

Hit f6 several times to increase the brightness.  At the lowest dim setting the screen appears to be off.
