I got the feeling that maybe friend of the best show, and SNL writer John Mulaney may have written this sketch as an homage to the best show... perhaps?

I was thinking the same thing. I also think there's probably a few SNL writers that listen to TBSOWFMU.

@ Keith: If it's not the talent, it's the writers. Now that Tom's unemployed, maybe he can go write high-brow for SNL.

No offense to the writers there, but wouldn't this be a huge step backwards for his career if he did?*

*the answer is of course, yes.

Yep, and that's not even a suck up to Tom. That's just reality. Tom's beyond that life.

Also, on Tuesdays the SNL writers pull an all-nighter.

That's what I mean. It's like being on a treadmill set to "haul ass" 24/7.

If the writers are fans of the Best Show, then why didn't the Gossip Girl: Staten Island sketch include references to Sedutto's, Hylan Blvd., The Lemon Tree, Jim Hanley's, etc?

Tom/PFT > SNL

I enjoyed Gunt because I could imagine the guys in Gunt high-fiving each other over how great their name is.

Here's what puzzles me: there are so many incredibly talented people on SNL (on screen and in the writing room). Why is it so meh? I know what Bob O says and that seems clear to me, but, even so, shouldn't it at least be a little bit better? I laugh more at Harold night at the UCB and I'm not that big into Improv.

Two reasons, I think:

1) It's recurring character-driven. They're always looking for the next Water Cooler Hit.

2) They have to write to the comedic talents (or lack thereof) of whoever's hosting that week.
