I want something eerie and creepy, not gory.  I don't know if Rob Zombie can capture that.

Isn't there a good department store scene in the original Carnival of Souls?   Something along those lines, perhaps.  

There is scene in which she is in a department store and is unnable to communicate with anyone, but when she is wandering around the abandoned complex that is a kind of old timey amusement park.

That was a Twilight Zone, right?

Their problem is that they aren't thinking big enough. They need to put the whole thing in orbit and use a space elevator to get to and from it. It sounds like the best place ever (except the Toby Keith thing).
