The Triangle
« on: January 04, 2010, 11:27:08 PM »
As some of you may know, I just moved to Chapel Hill. Tips? Recommendations? I'm sort of on the border between Chapel Hill and Durham, so I see myself spending time in both towns. Oh, and Carrboro! That's not far at all.

Thanks in advance!
Too soon?

Never been but both of our usernames are F&G characters! Can you pinpoint this reference: "Well, you're dressed for it!" My real name is Paul.

It's been a while... is it from the episode where Sam wears a Parisian night suit? Or is it the one where Alan steals his clothes and pushes him out of the locker room? I tried cheating and googled it, and I mostly came across erotic fiction. Hoo boy!

It was the episode when Bill and Neal fight Alan(?) and Sam is rushing out of school to meet them and runs into Cindy. She is wearing a cheerleader uniform and Sam asks her what's up and she says she is about to go cheer. Then in an awkward yelp Sam says "Well yrrrrrrr dressed forrrrit!"

I know someone with a solid culinary track record who works here:

I also read about a local band called "Archies of Loaf" in a SPIN magazine scene report.  I believe they play collegiate rock 'n roll music in the vein of The Connells.

If you get bored, you can stalk poet and novelist Fred Chappell.

I haven't lived there in 5 years, but the best restaurant there was a very small Mexican place next to McDondalds on Franklin. (I don't remember the name, but it was great!) Don't fall into the Armadillo Grill propaganda...it is lies! there was also a good place called Bravo's outside of Carrborro near the dog park.

AVOID 96 rock at all costs. If you want to listen to the radio, the only real worthwhile thing is 88.1 WKNC (NC State's college station).

In my opinion, the coolest parts of the Triangle happen away from the campuses (for example, the best meal I purchased there happened at an unlicensed restaurant in some lady's apartment), but you sort of have to find those things yourself. If you want to see bands, there are plenty of places to see them, but (unless they are are huge) the shows are usually on weekdays.

If you want to understand where you actually are in the country, spend some time in Graham, Wilson, or Winston-Salem. What happens in Orange County isn't really North Carolina. If you plan on only using it for school, then it doesn't matter, but if you plan on staying, check out some of the small towns around UNC and Duke and see if it really fits.

The most hilarious part of North Carolina is a place called Paradise Club. I have never been inside it, but seeing it from the outside is enough. It's off of 87 on the way up from Chapel Hill to Graham. You only need to pass it to understand it magnificence. Enjoy if you dare.

I will think on it some.  If you have specific things you want to know post them here.

For high end restaurants in Durham, I would recommend Nana's, Magnolia Grill, Foursquare.  In Chapel Hill, you have La Residence.  People really like Elaine's on Franklin.  In Raleigh you have Second Empire and the whole Glenwood South district.

I like Armadillo Grill.  Most Mexican in the Triangle is sort of Tex-Mex or Cal-Mex.

Lots of good stuff.  Welcome to the region.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!
