I remember how unexpected and wonderful it was when Leslie Nielsen made the transition from the stolid, stalwart, utterly humorless leading-man-(in-B-movies) type that I knew from childhood into the hilarious deadpan fellow with whom a lot of the people grieving for him now are most, perhaps exclusively familiar.  He made me laugh often.  I hope his death was as unawful as possible.

I first knew his face from The Poseidon Adventure in which he played the doomed captain. Seeing him in Airplane! helped me get over the trauma of the former film...somewhat.

I found complete episodes of Police Squad here:

I have fond memories of catching the show during it's all-too-brief run on ABC, way back when. In 1982, there wasn't anything else remotely like this on American TeeVee.

Yeah, it was a thrill when it showed up, wasn't it?  I was sharing an apartment with my sister in Boston at the time, and I remember well sitting with her on our crappy couch and giggling away.

I've seen "Airplane!" more times than I can remember. I still think it's just about the greatest thing ever.

And so is "Police Squad!".

The opening sequence -- of the siren going places a car should not -- blew my adolescent mind back in the day

The first Naked Gun movie is one of my favorite things ever.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

At a free screening of all six episodes of Police Squad! I saw back in the mid 2000s (shown on LaserDisc - of all formats,) I was laughing so hard during this scene I literally had to go outside for a few minutes to catch my breath.

I always thought that was Lorne Green, it is in fact Leslie Nielsen. Thanks for clearing that up Chris L.
