For all you SAMOAS fans;  since it's post-girl scout cookie season, I wanted to let you know that Keebler's Coconut Dreams are on the supermarket shelves, aka Samoas!

There are so few legal vices for the under 21 set, so I say let them have their sugar and a little palm oil.
The anti-palm oil movement is important, and there is some environmentally safer palm oil production being done.  Evil palm oil and eviler corn syrup are in most commercial baked goods. Now instead of saying high fructose corn syrup, the labels just say fructose to confuse the issue.   And palm oil is there because people weren't buying hydrogenated oil products.  Look how long it took for the trans-fat bans.
I usually buy all butter products, but mostly I bake my own, substituting agave or honey for corn syrup in recipes that call for it.  I know most people won't take the time to do their own baking, but it is a very rewarding endeavor and the only way to know exactly what goes into your food and snacks.

How many recipes do you follow that call for corn syrup?  I come across it very rarely.  Mostly in candy recipes, and who makes candy all the time?

That said, there is a particular candy that I make every year or so, the recipe for which involves one tablespoon of Karo.  I use it without guilt or qualm.

FOUL! Taglongs ARE Peanut Butter Patties.

Good day, sir!

Just noticed this. You are correct.  My apologies for the error.   But then again, even if we tally both Tagalongs and Peanut Butter Patties together, Samoas still win.  And Peanut Butter Patties even had the benefit of being listed first.

The ubiquitous corn syrup is in all sorts of recipes.  Icings and glazes for shine, breads for enhanced browning, and cookies to keep them softer longer,  candies, and sorbets for creamy texture.  I think corn syrup probably came into use in American recipes as people abandoned the strong flavor of molasses.  In the baking industry it was probably used because it is a cheaper product.  Supposedly it's not bad in itself, but the equipment it is processed on is extremely old and leeches mercury into the syrup.  Anyway, honey and low glycemic agave can be substituted  and they are worry free.  Except the honey from those bees that indulged in the syrup leaking from old maraschino cherry vats, and who then made red honey, which was bitter and tasteless.  Sweet nectar is sweet nectar to the poor bees, who couldn't tell the difference between the corn syrup and red dye and natural nectar.  I think the beekeepers lost a lot of honey revenues and bees on that recently.
