Nightmare Machine on Wait Wait
« on: November 13, 2011, 02:13:20 PM »
On Wait Wait Don't Tell Me yesterday, during the "Bluff the Listener" segment, one of the fake news items was about a new invention called "Welcome To My Nightmare", a "bad dream machine" which is described pretty much the same way as the Nightmare Machine™.

You can listen here: http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=35&prgDate=11-12-2011 (starts at 4:21 in the "Bluff the Listener" segment).

The inventor's name is even Straus.

Could it just be a coincidence?

Not really related, but also in the "Could it just be a coincidence" category, here's a recent link to an Onion article about a guy who invents more and more elaborate stories to explain why he doesn't hang out anymore, reminded me an awful lot of a recent Best Show Gem in which the caller missed a softball game. http://www.theonion.com/articles/friends-excuses-for-why-he-cant-hang-out-getting-m,26600/ Of course it porbably is a coincidence, with so many people making comedy, common themes are bound to emerge, but it certainly seemed like the same idea.

If the inventor's name is Straus, its bound to be shout-ou/homage.
