Tom and Mike's book/author suggestion
« on: November 28, 2012, 04:41:47 PM »
Hey best show fans,

A few months ago, Tom and Mike were discussing one of their favorite authors on the show. Does anyone remember who that author was and which of his books Tom said he liked the best? It seems like the word "Atlanta" might have been in the title, but it was so long ago I'm not sure. I am in need of something good to read, and Tom seems like he has good taste. Thanks.

There is a huge books thread in the general discussion board.  Check it out!  As to your query, I'm sorry I can't help.

Yes, Charles Portis. Masters of Atlantis is probably his funniest book, but all of his novels are worth reading. I'm currently reading Escape Velocity, an anthology of miscellaneous journalism and fiction, that came out earlier this year.

Hey Mike, have any nonfiction recommendations?

I read Methland after you mentioned it on air last year, and I really enjoyed that one.

Tim Weiner's Legacy of Ashes was great. Also, if you feel like really getting enraged, try Hedrick Smith's Who Stole the American Dream.

In fiction, I'm really enjoying Kevin Powers' The Yellow Birds.

Cool, thanks! Turns out my dad is a huge Charles Portis fan, so I have access to all those books.
