Headphones are a thing to have good ones of
« on: February 16, 2015, 12:24:35 AM »
I have these great Panasonic headphones that bring out hidden frequencies and make the bass parts in any song sound awesome.  And I have these other Sony headphones that make everything sound flat so I can hear every instrument at the same time so Radiohead's "No Surprises" unfolds like a rainbow mandala but doesn't sound as amazing, just even and clear so I can figure it out like my drummer ex boyfriend who gave them to me said they would.  So I think I have a calibrating mark for measuring sound quality over corded over the ear headphones.

Now I'm looking for wireless ones for my dad who is driving me bananas by wanting to watch five or six hours of tv per night at volumes of 50-60 on our HDTV.  There's no escape.  I know it's on from anywhere in the house.  I am worried about my own hearing and want to go back to watching TV at volumes of 6-12.

So... headphones.  I don't really know how wireless ones work with a smart TV.  Is there always a base station?  Do they all play static into your ears to cancel noise like my hated noise canceling ear buds?  Do computer company ones that are bluetooth work?

I am shopping around for a headset under $100 but have found the reviews and specs lacking in the real sound quality info and how the connection to the tv or how independent of the speaker sound they are.  I am determined not to just cave in and buy Best Buy Insignias.  And TV Ears seem like they would work but are an insult to baby boomers in denial about going deaf.

Anybody have a headset you love?  Cheaper is not better, sound quality is but I don't have $300 for Sennheisers.

Looking for keyboard lute bandmates in Lord of the Rings Online to play songs from Spaced Out (Shatner and Nimoy) and any other greatest hits.  Find Percabald on Brandywine server most days 9-12 US cst, O to friend, IM to IM.  30 min maybe to new hobbit minstrel with lute.

I don't know anything about wireless headphones at all. But Wirecutter does, and I trust them as much as anybody.

I have a pair of (wired) Sennheisers (that I believe were about $150), but I pretty much only use my Sony Wireless Headphones 2.0 that were designed for Playstation, because they honestly sound so much better.  I paid $115 for them here in Australia, so they are likely even cheaper when you use real money

I'm not sure how they would work with a TV, but they come with a USB bluetooth stick that I assume would be plug and play.  if I have a chance, I'll try to see if I can get them to work on my TV, and bypass the Playstation.

also, I can't ever visit my dad without feeling like I'm caught inside some live-action-constant-bleeding-decibel-explosion, and as far as I know, he only watches the Food Network.  Guy Ferrari must be the next Rambo.

Thank you guys so much!  I will look into Wirecutter and am glad to know Sennheisers aren't everything to everybody.  Now I'm thinking maybe some Audio Technica ones.  I hadn't thought about whether I need a microphone for using the smart TV as a cool 2001 a Space Telephone yet, but maybe I can get a separate mic later for that and just get headphones now.

Can someone answer this perhaps dumb question?

If I only listen to mp3 and podcasts thru an mp3 player or my computer, is there an actual benefit to good/high quality headphones?

I got a pair of Beats and loooooove them. I had some ear buds before I got em and didn't realize how poor the quality was until I got the new ones.
