This sounds like a Newbridge character:

"We’re living in a time of being fed canned pre-programmed backing tracks and lip-syncing in place of the electricity and passion of real live R&B,” Stanley said.

“When I was a boy, before I ever saw The Who or Led Zeppelin, I saw Solomon Burke and Otis Redding.  I saw The Temptations and all that music is part of the foundation of the music I’ve made.  Soul Station is my chance to celebrate it for a night that’s real, live and faithfully recreates the sound with the respect it deserves.  Whether it’s The Stylistics, The Dramatics, The Temptations, Smokey and the Miracles, Blue Magic and on, these songs, arrangements and sound just blow you away."
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

That Rolling Stone article is the gift that keeps on giving.
(from a few sentences later):

In other Kiss news, the group recently partnered with the makers of Scooby-Doo for a new feature-length cartoon, and the band was honored by songwriting-royalties organization ASCAP with a "Founders Award" at a gala where Dave Grohl called them his childhood superheroes. The band's singer-bassist, Gene Simmons, has also launched a film venture with WWE studios, which will make "elevated horror movies."

KISS and Scooby-Doo: two things that peaked in the 1970s and that you maybe didn't know were still around, but they are.

The new Scooby Doo show is really funny. I guess it's been going for some years now but was really surprised when I caught an episode in the emergency room (nothing serious, just stitches, thanks for asking).

Kiss is still pretty good too. I bet that new animated feature movie is also pretty good.

Paul Stanley's soul cover band is probably pretty good too. Except that HOOWEEE he is a lousy singer.

mostlymeat (what's the rest of it, water?),

I like the cut of your rhetorical jib, and your contributions to my favorite thread (http://www.friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php?topic=5419.0), but I want to make sure I follow. Let me summarize:

LIKE 2015 version of Scooby Doo
LIKE 2015 version of KISS (especially Eric and Tommy?)
LOOKING FORWARD to new KISS-Scooby Doo cartoon
DO NOT LIKE Paul Stanley as a singer.

This interests me. Are you a big fan of Gene's singing? And Eric's version of "Beth," a song not actually written by Peter Criss about not-Peter Criss' wife and now not even sung by Peter Criss?

Followup question: how much lower can things get for Peter Criss? Also, does Tommy Thayer really sing "Shock Me"?

I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

Gene's voice is so strange - growly and deep like a proper bassman - but for some reason gets away with singing lead... a lot!

Paul's voice is ok, and in the context of the songs it works really well, but during the concert I saw a few years ago he did some accapella soul trills (whoa-whoa-whoaaaaaaaaaaaa type stuff) that were embarassingly awful. Then he zoomed across the Oakland Coliseum on a zip line with his guitar and I forgot all about it.

The best is when Paul & Gene harmonize though - two rough instruments blended into a perverted bronx cheer that I find endlessly compelling. "Got to Choose", "Goin' Blind" and all the rest - a perfect union!

It's a shame about Peter Criss - the only guy who actually has a terrific voice.  I still can't fathom that he "forgot" how to play drums! And Beth kinda stinks, am I right?

I was sad to not see Ace (the only likable Kiss member?) at the Alive35 tour, but damn it Tommy did a great job and by the end of the show I became a fan. And yeah he sang Shock Me! So weird.

Speaking of, I wish someone had uploaded Scharpling's shock jock bits to youtube. I laughed so hard!

Yes, the only likable KISS member is the one who had a penchant for dressing up in full Nazi regalia. That probably tells you something right there.

I don't like "Beth," I agree that Peter is the best singer, but people who know say that at his best he wasn't a good enough drummer to front a college band.

It's amazing that in a band with rock's possibly most narcissistic lead singer and definitely its greediest bassist, the worst *person* was the sad sack drummer.

I like a lot of the stuff from KISS through Dynasty and then Creatures of the Night. I listened to the 80s stuff in the 80s but can't tell you the last time I voluntarily listened to anything after 1982.

It's gotta be better than Steven Tyler's "country" band.  At least he doesn't have to keep his scarves in storage anymore...
