I can't win for losing
« on: August 01, 2007, 07:55:41 PM »
Tom said this last night, and I said it today.  Tom also wondered aloud during the show what the hell this means, although we know what it means, it means that nothing seems to be going right at all; it's just an odd expression.

In Tom's case, I think it's just part of The Best Show drama -- sometimes the show meets Tom's high expectations (regardless, it's always a great show), and sometimes he thinks it goes off the rails for reasons Tom doesn't feel that he can control.  I sure know what he means.  Tom's mid-summer swoon coincides with my own, although in his case, The Kid just keeps bringing it.  He just thinks the show is lagging when in fact it's going just fine.

In my case, I've had quite a few days like this in the last year, and it makes me feel like I should be doing something completely different for a living.  Sarah writes, "today...I'm editing the ninety-page bibliography of a book on female monastics from the fifth to the fifteenth century.  This should explain my great need for distraction."  Well, Sarah, I'd take that assignment over having these kinds of days.  Sorry to sound so beat.  I probably just need a vacation.  Maybe the fall will bring new hope.

I believe "You can't win for losing" means you can't "win" a prize for consistently losing the race.  In other words, there's no, say, tin metal to go along with the silver, gold, and bronze which is awarded to he who finishes last.  The idea being if one could win for losing, the person remarking on the lack of such a thing would be a champion.  of losing.  I'm sorry if this is the way you feel, Fido.

The cool, crisp weather of autumn should help.  I always wake up in the fall.

Or maybe a new job.

Sorry, Fido.

What about "I can't stand up for falling down?"  Looking at the use of "for" in the title, one could argue it means "I can neither support nor defend the act of falling down."  Given the desperate lyrical content, "I can't stand up from falling down" seems more precise.  And what about the Kevin McDonald-esque dance moves in this video?  I DON'T GET IT!!

"I can neither support nor defend the act of falling down."
I can't get behind getting ahead.

???

Empathy from me too, by the way, for what it's worth.
