I am finally listening to the July 31st show and I am totally and completely over Captain Jack and would happily never hear his BS again as long as I live, that joke is not funny anymore.

Me too.  It's not the fish, which I could definitely see the "crossing the line" humor in if I could take it as just some over-the-top prank, so much as the tone of his voice in the previous week's rant.  That was weird.  How freaked out he was that his era of common caller comfort seems to have passed on a bit was frightening.  Yeah, there hasn't been much Petey, Sevie Blue, Officer Tom, or Purple Shirt recently, but first of all, as Tom said, what is HE supposed to do about it, call them?  Secondly, it's actually been less than a year since the whole "Tall Bike" thing with Purple Shirt, OT just called in a few weeks ago from the patrol car, and Petey does actually pop his head in every now and then, but _______'s maniacal tear about Tom forgetting all the "little people," I think, belies exactly the kind of insecurity that can actually turn to lashing out in frightening ways.
Sorry for the armchair psychoanalysis, and I'm probably making too much of it, but jeez - the guy has spent YEARS doing this tired schitck that's only raison d'etre, as far as I can see, is to be a sarcastic spoiler.  In his mind, he sees himself as some integral part of the show, I guess, but...  come on, guy...
Now write me a receipt so I can tip on outta here...

That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking when I started this thread, but was unable to so succinctly articulate it.  There's something really greedy about that mentality, like if you give them an inch they want to take a mile.  Ugh, this whole thing is upsetting.  For shame.

I'd argue that not giving Captain Jack one iota of attention from this point on would be the best course of action. Don't mention his name, don't take his calls, nothing. Because acknowledgement of any kind seems to be exactly the thing he wants and will continue to strive for in increasingly psychotic ways.

My mom called me this morning to remind me that she needs a ride from the mechanic this afternoon. She could tell I was a little down and asked why. I told her about the fish debacle, and she knows next to nothing about the Best Show. Still, she simply said that ____ is obviously mentally unwell. And he is. At least he didn't pull a John Hinckley for you, because I don't any of us want President Cheney.

Well, all of the humor was in how Tom treated That Character from a Billy Joel Song anyway.  So if Tom really doesn't feel like dealing with him anymore (and who, honestly, has ever been able to fully tell when the Kid is kidding?  Maybe not always even him) I say good riddance.

Still, that whole Kid Kansas/That Character from a Billy Joel Song and then Tom sings over them was one of the best moments in the history of the show for me.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

That's for sure.  i was lamenting that I might have to say goodbye to this archive after last night.

Guys, listen.  There's no way Tom's just gonna up and bail like that.   It wasn't so many weeks ago that he and Jon did that AST interview, and wasn't a good chunk of that interview devoted to Tom talking super-sincerely about how the Best Show and his partnership with Jon is the most important to him of all the balls he juggles?  Or something to that effect?  How's he going to go from that to "peace out!" in a matter of weeks without any further explanation?  You really think he's gonna let Capt. Jack win this one?  You really think he's gonna go out like that?  Over one creepy dude?

Have a little faith, people.

I do, Christine.  Although I do think there may be some time off, which was already planned.

Damn it, I'm speculating.  Stop it right now, Sarah!

My thoughts have been that perhaps any Best Show departure would also somehow be connected to the possibility of a Scharpling & Wurster television project (other than T&E stuff.) Which, while I look forward to the Best Show every week more than anything else, would be very exciting for them and us alike.
