New York bars?
« on: September 04, 2007, 07:31:48 PM »
Hi there,

Any recommendations for bars in
Manhattan?  A friend and I will be
visting from Vancouver in late October.

Any tips on casual bars, perhaps with
some live music...nothing too expensive.
Something unpretentious.

Thanks all,

Tim G

Sounds like you want it all, buddy.  Not in my New York City.  Drop one of those criteria and you may have yourself some suggestions.

I thought NYC was expensive until I went to London, try paying $20 for a budweiser.

I misread this as "New York bras." I was going to recommend an awesome lady underthings store near Zabar's that does bra fittings. They have a little old lady who does it!

Not sure if these fit your criteria, per se, but here are some bars I like:

(1) HiFi.  Resonably priced, has a great happy hour and is generally not too crowded on weeknights which is awesome if you want to play pool.  There is at least one very cute bartender, oh, and also the greatest jukebox known to man.

(2) 2A. Corner of 2nd Street and Avenue A.  Also reasonably priced & with a good happy hour (with bonus free popcorn!), and fairly laid back until 10 or 11, at which point you can count on it getting kind of insane.

(3) The Magician on Rivington & Essex.  Totally laid back and unpretentious, generally lacking in white belts and footless tights.  Can't remember what the prices were like.

(4) The Crocodile on East 14th.  Um, they have free pizza and a photo booth.  I'm not sure what else you need.

(5) Ace Bar on E. 5th.  Okay, this bar is kind of horrible and loud, but they totally have skeeball.  Pick your battles, that's what I say.

not that anything in NYC will ever come close to the glorious Bosman's Sidebar (RIP), I would recommend:

In Brooklyn:

the new Luna Lounge - live music
Daddy's - back porch
Barcade - video games
Poorhouse - kinda small, but melikes
Trash Bar - requisite tattoo sleeves, karaoke

in NYC

Down the Hatch - mellow, west village
Mars Bar - punx and ne'er do wells
Lakeside Lounge - East Village
Rudy's - Hell's Kitchen (don't know if it's still around)
Mona's - East Village (see above)

I've never been, but I've always wanted to grab a drink at The Algonquin Hotel. Sounds kinda nice.

I vote Lakeside Lounge and Welcome to the Johnson's is a good hipster joint.

As for Williamsburg/Greenpoint/Brooklyn, I used to go to the Turkey's Nest all the time after playing kickball in McCarren Park, or when I wanted to take a break from welding my tall bike together.  The turkey's nest is the definition of "casual".  There's pool there and a juke box and at least circa 2004 it was a glorious dump with 3 dollar 32 ounce beers in styrofoam cups and a deer-shooting game (although I liked it better when they had  a video bowling game).

Hi Sonya,

I think Vancouver's Railway Club is the kind of thing
I'm looking for.  Although the vibe seems to be
changing slightly (for the worse), it's pretty much
matched my criteria for years.

Thanks again everyone for your tips!

Why would you go to London and drink Budweiser?

Why would anyone every drink anything that wasn't a budweiser?

Rudy's - Hell's Kitchen (don't know if it's still around)

Rudy's is still around, but it's the worst kept secret in NYC.  They even opened another one, called CIRCUS, that's a block and a half south and sort of a simulacrum of Rudy's divey-ness.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

I've only been to New York once, in 2005.  I remember liking
Mars Bar  Total dump, in a good way.  On the Bowery, if I remember.
Manitoba's  Owned by Handsome Dick of the Dictators
K.G.B  St. Marks Place(I think)  kinda expensive

For music I went to Knitting Factory in So-Ho and Tonic.  all of these were in Manhattan
Locals may have their own opinions about these places.  Man, this makes me wish I was
there now.  sometime in 2008 I will be.
