Dirtbombs/Jay Reatard @ Maxwell's
« on: September 17, 2007, 11:35:35 PM »
The Dirtbombs are playing Maxwell's on the 20th, and Jay Reatard is also playing according to his MySpace page. I am not keen on going into Hoboken at night on my own. Who wants to come with?!?!?!?!

And for good measure: ?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I don't know. The website doesn't say.

So, do I take the PATH train or something there? I could take a train there, and then call a cab for the ride back. Unless someone who lives in the Manhattan or something wants to give me a ride or something.

It's like less that 10 blocks on one street from the PATH to Maxwell's and it's sort of impossible to get lost - the whole town is just a square mile.  PEOPLE WALK IN CITIES THAT AREN'T MIAMI, YA KNOW!  GET OFF MY INTERNET!

It is actually really easy, in any case.  And except for the meathead Wall Street guys spilling out of the bars (which IIRC are at their worst on Thursdays), pretty safe.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

It's not like the old days, Tom, when you and I could walk down and see Nirvana at the local club.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

I am not keen on going into Hoboken at night on my own.

Considering Hoboken a bad area strengthens the rumour that Filthy Laurie is filthy rich.

Laurie -

You might as well say 'They have Thomas Kinkade paintings at the mall, but I'm not comfortable going there at night'.

What are you afraid of, a mob hit? You take the PATH, you walk up the stairs, you take a cab directly to Maxwells (if you don't feel like walking). It's as easy as pie!

Tom.

PS - Im terrified of the streets of Miami - I assume it's like that scene in Scarface where Tony shot that dude in the middle of the road while everybody else stood around in horror. So what do I know?

Dude! It's pretty cheap and also easier to get car service (I'm talking sedans here, not stretch Hummers, buddy) in Brooklyn, when you don't want to take the F train back into town and get stabbed (Google stat! 1,890,000 results for F train stabbing!). So, yes, I get a cab into town (which takes approximately twenty minutes since no one wants to drive to fucking Brooklyn), and I get a car to pick me up in Brooklyn, since there are NO CABS, and I pay that person $25.00. And I'm talking about the DUMBO area, which is just under the bridge, you know? It's not like I'm talking about Bushwick or something.

So, are there cabs near the PATH train, or do I have to call for one?

THANKS FOR THE INFO!!!!!!!!!

I support any endeavor, no matter the cost, that keeps Laurie from operating an automobile.

Oh hush, I'm not a bad driver. I have never been the driver in an accident, and I got a speeding ticket once. ONCE. Oh, and I got a bullshit ticket in Pinecrest for a "rolling stop," but those Pinecrest cops hand out tickets like candy. They've got nothing better to do.

People jaywalking freak me out! That's all. WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE RUNNING ACROSS THE STREET IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BLOCK WHEN I AM TRYING TO DRIVE? It's not cool.

So a friend of mine is working with Habitat for Humanity in Miami with two other people.  They are staying at a church - a church with bars on the windows.  There's no phone they can use in the church.  They've been warned not to go outside, but how bad can things be, really?

They see a pay phone on a street across the church parking lot.  Immediately after they get there, the police drive up.  They tell my friend that he and the others must be buying drugs because there's "no other reason white people would be in this neighborhood."  The cop then says to my friend and the other male in the group, "We would have found your bodies a couple of days from now."  Then he turns to the female in the group and says, "I don't know WHAT they would have done with you."

He then insists on driving them the 50 feet back to the church.  Regardless of whether this guy was exaggerating, it sounds like a skeery place to me.
