Is there actually a Criterion Lone Star? (I assume that's what the movie is) If not, there definitely should be. John Sayles movies usually make me feel talked down to, but that one's pretty terrific.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

No there isn't, but there definitely should be.

Everything in the Criterion store is 40% off until Nov 24, "while supplies last."

Michael Ritchie is an underappreciated director (or just unknown to most). He's hit-and-miss, but check out this awesome 1-2-3 punch he made in the early seventies:

Prime Cut (1972)
The Candidate (1972)
Smile (1975)

To make those three amazing, wildly different films back-to-back-to-back is quite a feat. (Consider them all recommended.)

You totally left out probably one of the best sports movies ever the original The Bad News Bears

Has anyone seen Downhill Racer?  It's a 1969 Ritchie skiing drama starring Redford and Hackman, so I suspect it's one the best films ever made.  As far as I know it's never been released on DVD.

It's on my wanted list! Sounds great, doesn't it?

EDIT: It's actually out on R2 DVD!

A friend of mine forwarded this e-mail from Criterion Key-O and Janus Films Managing Director Jonathan Turell :

Jazzed for the Feb release of Bunuel's The Exterminating Angel (my favorite of his) and Simon of the Desert.

LOL

I think I mentioned I eventually watched Downhill Racer. As bland as you can imagine.

The Criterion BluRays are out, as you know. They are region locked, which is frustrating, so I've had to resort to - ahem - alternate routes. Holy shit do they look great (Chungking and Third Man, haven't checked Bottle Rocket yet).

Some great covers for April:

FYI, Science is Fiction comes w/ Yo La Tengo's Sounds of Science score for Painleve's films.

Someone on the Criterion forum confirmed that The Last Days of Disco will be out sometime in 2009.  Sony also recently licensed two titles to Criterion.  One involves gambling, and the other involves an apartment.

Hmmm...  I think Sony owns California Split and that went out of print pretty quickly.  I'll just assume the other one is Joe's Apartment.

They're doing a Criterion of What Happens in Vegas already? That was quick! I hope it's on Blu-ray with an Ashton Kutcher commentary track.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

I'd like a commentary track from a "Film historian" like Ben Lyons.
"Son, there's a thin line between crazed and rabid"
