When I go to the used bookstore, I buy any book that has a penguin on it. Is that the same deal? I mean, I am assuming you don't watch these DVDs just like I don't read the books, right?

Well in the case of the ones I actually buy they're films that I already love and have seen multiple times (the usual price of Criterion generally discourages from buying titles I haven't seen), but I get a whole lot from Netflix that sit on my computer unwatched.

Right. Because they are so expensive, I won't buy a Criterion that I haven't seen already. As such, I only own a handful of them.

Well, B & N/Criterion extracted their pound of flesh from me. I've dropped almost $100 during this sale. Then again, there usually aren't sales like this, so I guess it's worth it.

You dummy!  You should've shown more self-control I say as I stare at Irene Jacob on my newly purchased copy of The Double Life of Veronique.

Yeah I ended up going on a second trip and getting 3 more.  I'm probably done, but I plan on watching Woman in the Dunes to see if I want to get the Teshigahara box.

Here's my take so far:

EUROPA
THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH (Blu Ray)
THREE FILMS BY HIROSHI TESHIGAHARA
ACE IN THE HOLE
FIVE FILMS BY JOHN CASSAVETES
ECLIPSE SERIES 11: LARISA SHEPITKO

ACE IN THE HOLE and the Cassavetes box were gifts, so I haven't spent THAT much. Yet.

I started a job a couple weeks ago, and should get my first check this week. God help me, I'm planning to blow at least $200 more before the sale is through. I need that Imamura box. And the Rossellini Eclipse set. And REPULSION on Blu Ray.

Should I follow through on my proposed splurge, I will update this post with my most recent takings.

I love Ace in the Hole and watch it pretty much every time it comes on the TV - which used to be a lot b/c I think it wasn't released on video for a long time. It's so mean.

Yeah, Criterion did a masterful job with Ace in the Hole.

I'm looking forward to watching the Friends of Eddie Coyle, which I picked up during this sale.

Just saw this for the first time yesterday.  Douglas is great.

I watched Eddie Coyle a couple weeks ago and it's pretty great. Mitchum is top notch. Also, it must be the most faithful adaptation of a novel ever. Even the dialogue in the film is pretty much verbatim from the book. Both are worth checking out, but maybe don't read and then watch so close together, as I did.

Yeah, you guys ever hear of Netflix?

(I actually sold all my DVDs years ago to avoid being compelled to collect yet another thing.)

Eddie Coyle (movie) is great, though my wife hated it.  Total dude movie.  If I liked this Peter Yates movie would I also like Mother, Jugs & Speed?

Yeah, I mostly use Netflix and then only buy the titles I really love.

Me too. When I really like a movie, I tend to watch it a bunch of times, which makes Netflix impractical.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.
