Criterion Does It Again

Someone on the Criterion forum confirmed that The Last Days of Disco will be out sometime in 2009.  Sony also recently licensed two titles to Criterion.  One involves gambling, and the other involves an apartment.

Hmmm...  I think Sony owns California Split and that went out of print pretty quickly.  I'll just assume the other one is Joe's Apartment.

Leo McCarey's Make Way for Tomorrow

I know a bunch of hardcore cinephiles who will positively cream their pants over this. McCarey has some very, very devoted followers, and Make Way for Tomorrow is considered the ultimate unsung masterpiece in a career mostly forgotten today. (And Ozu completely stole the story for his Tokyo Story, etc etc.)

That Ferreri film sounds interesting. Don't think I've ever heard of it.

I remember when I watched it I was thinking, "This STINKS!"  I have yet to change my mind.  Those kids (the characters, not the actors) were trying too hard to be cool/hip/"alternative."  Sleeping in a tent in the middle of your garage?  C'mon!

The only real Suburbia is the older one about the punks in Southern California, with the dogs and the nails in the walls, and raiding people's iceboxes for food.

And for my money, the most enjoyable movie about suburban living is still Over The Edge.  Where's the Criterion version of that movie?

I thought subUrbia was passable (kinda like those early Black Flag singles), but it's definitely a minor Linklater work.  I think Criterion just wants to maintain their relationship with him, and it will hopefully lead to a Before Sunrise/Before Sunset release.

Steve in NoHo - Over the Edge is great, but Criterion would have to license it from Warner Brothers, who released a pretty solid DVD w/ a director/screenwriters commentary track.  I'm hoping Criterion will get Matt Dillon into the collection via My Bodyguard.
