Newbie question
« on: September 21, 2007, 09:04:09 PM »
First Post!

I'm kind of new to The Best Show on WFMU and I had a question that is sort of general to the show.

Occasionally/usually, when Tom hangs up with people, you hear a sound clip of Tom saying something. Most times it kind of sounds like him saying "bye" but sometimes it's really distorted and exaggerated.

I'm really just curious to know what this is supposed to be, and maybe how it orignated, and if any such soundbites exist online.

That does pose an interesting question. If one were to add up all of the archives, how many hours of the Best Show are in existence?

Thanks!

Just to be a bit more of a pain, about how far back in the archives (more or less), just so I have a benchmark and am not endlessly sifting through the hours of archives out there!

I swear I wouldn't give you the runaround if I knew the answer to this question. But I bet KTB does and would spill it with a little coaxing.

If you're talking about that high-pitched falsetto sound he makes when saying good bye to a good caller, you needn't look far.  He does it several times every show.
Pick a recent one, kick back, and welcome to Flavor Country.

I have heard it a bunch of times already; I've listened all the way back to the beginning of the year. I just wanted a bit of info on the origin of why Tom does it. I think it's hillarious.

Above and beyond the call of duty KTB, above and beyond! Thanks a bunch.

It's actually been quite a topic of debate between me, my friend, and my brother. We debated back and forth whether it was a random soundclip from a sound board that would play when Tom hangs up or Tom saying it live each time. We noticed that it didn't happen all the time; it didn't happen during the GOMPs and sometimes it even occured before the other person was off the line. So the little snippit from May 29 may have helped us reach the conclusion that he does it live each time and that it's not integrated into his hangup button.

It sounded trivial, but this is one of those subtle things that make listening to Tom fun for us.

Thanks again all.

You should listen to them all regardless.  Not because it's your duty as a FOT but because it's fun, and that's what matters.

As far as I can tell, pretty much the only times Tom used sound clips were when he instigated the "listener-punishing party-zone" and when the FOT bought him a sound sampler and he turned people into ghosts.

Punishing the listeners is a recurring and very amusing theme in The Best Show -- and when you think about it, it's something you could never hear on commercial radio -- although commercial radio itself is a punishment, while listening to The Best Show is always rewarding.  Paradoxical!
