During one of the langorous, slowly stirred, juniper-tinged Tom-Laurie conversations, it came up that she'd received a painting for one of her tween birthdays.  Tom and the board ran from there.

A $700 painting, no less.

You know what I got for my 12th birthday?  A CARTON OF CIGARETTES.  The old man grabbed me by the shirt and said, "Smoke up, Buffy."
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

$700 is a lot, but not for a painting.  I sold a painting for $700 last year and I'm a total nobody.

btw, it's highly debatable that Veruca Salt the band was "darn good".

I think it's more that said painting was a birthday present for a twelve-year-old, JJ.  I'd be willing to bet that on the birthday when I had the biggest take--whichever one that was--all the gifts combined, from all four family members, probably didn't cost that much.  On the other hand, my parents are going to pay all the medical expenses ensuing from my recent finger mishap, which will amount to a hell of a lot more, so I really shouldn't thrown stones.  And the fact that they can afford to do this doesn't make them rich; they simply enjoy the benefits of decades of extreme frugality.  I would feel guilty and diminished at the prospect of accepting their generosity if the tremendous lack of ambition they instilled in me weren't responsible for my inability to afford decent health insurance.

I'm a Laurie fan and I would totally support her elevation to supercaller status, but I've gotta ask: Is it possible to be a supercaller when every one of your calls ends in a GOMP?
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Maybe a new category is needed.  SuperGOMPy?
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

I was actually pretty impressed with Shaq's fieldwork among the Piraha people, but in the end I think his case against Chomskyan universal grammar is exaggerated.

A case against universal grammar?  Why, Chomsky turned first language acquisition theory on it's head.  Was Shaq saying that we perchance don't have a L.A.D. imbedded in our heads?  For shame, Shaq.

Actually, I believe that Shaq espouses the theory of Shaqian Individual Grammar.  He asserts that he (and no one else) possesses "mad grammar skillz."  In other words, it's his language, and we just communicate in it.

Actually, the list of Shaqologisms I found seem to prove Chomsky's theory in a way:

Yeah, John, you have mad skills!  Everyone should check John's stuff out via the extracurricular activities thread.  It's awesome.  Just whatever you do, don't let Laurie make you into a porn star.

I don't remember who asked, but I teach Math, mainly Calculus and Statistics. I use it to explain my obsessions with the "music" of Robert Fripp and whoever can wedge themselves into the studio with him and his enormous head full of ideas.

You have a lot of personality for a math teacher, do you make your lessons "fun"?

I sacrifice "learning" at the altar of "fun". I have given up trying to impart knowledge, as the students have no interest in learning, but a nice punch line wins the day every time.

So is it safe to say that Dave from Knoxville is in love with Laurie from Miami?

I listened to Veruca Salt when I was a teenager. I just recently listened to them on Last FM and it was nostalgic :)

One year I got nothing for my birthday. My dad got drunk and admitted he forgot. I was a very understanding 10-year-old, I actually didn't really care.
