a place for you to eat, erika
« on: October 26, 2007, 06:56:26 PM »
i just heard this week's podcast. when i lived in nyc, i used to really like going to the yaffa cafe at 97 st mark's place. open 24 hours a day, pretty cheap prices (not dirt cheap, i remember it being about 10-15 bucks for dinner and dessert).

nice waitstaff, cool atmosphere, open 24-seven, decent, filling food. i don't know if you've been there, but that's my suggestion. good luck.

I also vouch for Yaffa!

My favorite place to eat, though, is Veselka.  24hr Ukranian-themed place on 2nd Ave and 9th Street.  The service could often be better, but that's generally not enough to sway me.  This place is my default.

I recommend the Grey Dog cafe on Carmine - they have good sandwiches and great coffee. And also the Magnolia bakery.

Veselka's a little better than Yaffa, which can be a little scary, hygiene and food-quality-wise.  But a couple of doors down from Yaffa there's a great Middle Eastern place, Cafe Mogador, which has some of the best iced tea on the planet.

I haven't finished listening to the podcast, so I don't know exactly what you're looking for, but I can weigh in once I'm done.  There are a lot of crappy overpriced tourist traps but also quite a few gems in the general area everyone seems to be talking about.  I'd say stay away from Around the Clock, Dallas BBQ, and what the hell is that sort-of-Japanese place that's a mini-chain around NYU?  I forget.  But you'll know it because it will smell like one of those rubber bar mats that's been soaked in a decade's worth of beer.

I hear the pizza from CBGB's is pretty good if you can snag some.  One of those guys around Astor Place might be selling some of it vintage on a blanket.

Apropos of nothing, I know the owners of Grey Dog but haven't talked to them in years.  In the 90s, we were cater-waiters together (they used to be actors) and they hired my old college roommate Mike to manage the place for the first 3 or 4 years of its existence.  I used to lurk there during his shifts, drinking free refills of coffee and writing.  It's kind of shocking that the place used to be empty enough that you could do that (this was like 1996 or so).
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

I'm sitting here waiting for Joe's Pizza to open up because I want a slice for breakfast... I may have to break down and show my racist side by enjoying a New York bagel instead.

We actually ended up eating pretty well, and at some fairly cheap places.

The Wash Square diner has an awesome gyro and great fries. Both things I could get in Baltimore or wherever, but it was the best option at 2AM after we got in on Friday night.

Le Deux Gamins (pronounced Lah Dew Gam On) is one of my all-time favorite restaurants in New York. I usually get the Croque Madame, which is an egg ham and cheese sandwich with bechamel, but this time chose the Eggs Norfolk for brunch. Two poached eggs with hollandaise (a LIGHT hollandaise) over smoked salmon on little (un-greasy) potato pancakes. YUM. Greg got the benedict which was also awesome. The coffee was so good I drank it black. I NEVER do that!

We stopped at some good coffee shoppe for pie and coffee in the afternoon. It was down on Madison Avenue amongst the most expensive stores, but managed to be inexpensive, homey, and incredibly friendly. Wish I could remember what it was called.

After the COC show we RAN into Galaxy next to Irving Plaza. I'd been standing for 4 hours and felt like someone had twisted my spine into knots. I also hadn't eaten since the aforementioned pie and thought I was gonna puke I was so hungry... so we grabbed some incredibly good burgers. They were served on some kind of english muffin or garlic bread or something tasty and good. Great fries.

Everywhere we ate had some good options for the veggies out there. Especially Galaxy and Le Deux Gamins. Tom, if you're reading -- check these places out next time you're in NYC. They won't make you feel like you want to start a revolution against the communist regime.

There's a bagel place/deli two doors down from Joe's and they are super duper cheap and they have very good wonderful large bagels.

Oh yes it most certainly is :) haha.

Ohhh.... I went to bed after 4 both nights I've been here. I feel as though this city has beaten me with bricks. Big, wonderful, heavy bricks of fun.

I sprung for the Bagel Buffet, which I've had a few times.

I'd suggest Cafe Caracas http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/caracas-arepa-bar/

REALLY tasty, very reasonable prices, friendly staff.
