Might as well start an NFL thread
« on: January 14, 2008, 08:32:01 AM »
Yesterday was a great day in sport, as the Indianapolis Colts' distinguished fans first booed a little girl for wearing a New England jersey (which, by the way, might have been the only crowd noise all day that wasn't obviously fake and fucking up the sound on my tv), then saw their team bounced out of the playoffs by... uhm, Billy Volek and some other dudes.  If I actually thought they had a Dungy-led prayer of beating the Pats I might mourn the loss of that overhyped matchup, but they didn't, so I don't.  Now Peyton can go back to making more faux-Lynchian phone commercials that I see 800 times.

You gotta admit, she was asking for that booing and she took it in stride, making her the best Patriots fan in the country by default.  I was curious about two kids throwing the shaka handsign up in that same line-up. Is there some kind of underground Punt, Pass and Kick movement going on in Hawaii?

Unless the Volek Era is about to begin - and I'm not sure I want to live in the Billy Volek Era anymore than I do the Patriots Era - the only hope to save football now is going to be on Favre in the Super Bowl. Which means he'll throw eight interceptions and we'll have to hear professional announcers giggling and enthusing about how he's "just having fun out there" and "he plays with the enthusiasm of a child." They said that once this season. Like he's Captain Marvel or something.

So basically, there's no good outcome to the playoffs now. Thanks, football.
This may be the year I will disappear.

San Diego... Super Chargers!

Honestly, I have no strong feelings about any of the teams remaining.  I am quite annoyed with Boston fans right now - I must warn you all... look to the Philly Boy Roy Tragedy from last year.  Pride goeth before a fall.

And someone needs to tell local boy Philip Rivers that screaming at a bunch of Midwest goobers doesn't make for a positive TV moment.

I guess I'd prefer Chargers (haven't won it) > Packers (it's the only joy available somewhere that cold) > Giants (our top sales rep will be more productive if they win) > Patriots (otherwise Bill Belichick may show us whether the world's most extreme smugness can actually be fatal)

Seriously - do you think there's anything in the world that Belichick enjoys?  Even stealing that guy's wife didn't make him happy.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

Come on Belichick is a laugh riot, you should see him on the Patriots all access show. He does a good ten minutes about flying on planes.

I'm just happy I won't have to listen to a week of Peyton vs. Brady. Also Brady has enough brains not to be in stupid TV ads shown ad nauseum.

Go Pats and it will be Packers vs. Pats.

My favorite moment was watching a little of the game on Fox and having the announcer make a remark something like "If it weren't for the writer's strike we'd all be enjoying the beginning of the season for 24, so enjoy it." Yes, it is hard to live without Kiefer Sutherland shocking a man's testes with an improvised cattle prod.

It's interesting that he doesn't. Guess he actually has a life.

I think the Pack can give the Patriots a good game. I'd hate to see a NE/NY rematch. The Giants gave everything they had plus some and burned out at the end and there's nothing else they can bring to beat them. I'd like to see Favre (as much as I despise his media love fest) go up against Brady and see how the Packers D can handle the NE offense. That would be a great game.

As much as a supreme douche Belichick is, I have to tip my hat to a guy who considers a hoodie appropriate clothing for work.

As a Redskins fan who had to suffer through the Norv Turner age, I'm rooting against the Chargers, actively.

Oh, and go Wizzzaaarrdds!

Packersssssss.  We DO need something to keep us happy till the water parks at Wisconsin Dells open again.  And you can only visit Plainfield so many times.
Sounds like someone was working as a conduit for nature's natural vengeance.  Just like Jesus.  And some of the others.

I will say, and I mean this as a compliment, that the Packers (of the remaining teams) come the closest to being "The Team of the Slobs". Even my girlfriend's grizzly old man who lives in a shack in Alaska is pulling for them.

Perhaps, but it would allow me to win my football pool. Actually, Giants beating the Patriots would work too.

That wouldn't be terrible. Chargers have a high-powered offense and it would be Rivers v. Manning which would be a great story because of their draft day saga. Patriots/Giants Part II would be much worse IMO. Patriots/Packers would be epic. Packers/Giants would be ok I suppose because then you'd have either a 75 year old QB winning it all or a QB that has been dogged since entering the league winning it all. Both would make for a memorable win.
