I'm not giving up on Gondry as a director, although Human Nature and Be Kind Rewind were awful. I haven't seen Science of Sleep yet, but I've heard mixed reviews on that (mostly bad, though). Should I give it a try? Gael García Bernal is kind of cute, after all, in a compact sort of way.

Yeah, I definitely expected more with that after ESOTSM.

I saw The Science of Sleep a while ago, when it was in theaters, so I can't really give an in depth review. Visually, it was fantastic, and Charlotte Gainsbourg is very alluring and does a really good job. As for Gael Garcia Bernal, I was actually pretty disappointed in his performance in that movie. The story is okay, it kind of falls flat after awhile. But I'd recommend seeing it once, just for the amazing artwork and dream sequences. It was good, but not great.

Yes! I really liked its dreaminess, its visual inventiveness. It's one of those movies where viewers need to be patient and accepting for it to work. If someone goes in looking for instant traction, they'll probably be disappointed, and say its bad--when its not. It's sweet and beautiful--there should be room for that to happen. I thought it was a lot of fun.

I like Gael too. Bad Education, Y Tu Mama Tambien, and Amores Perros are some of my favorite films. My problem with Science was it didn't feel like there was much substance to it. The visuals were great, and it seemed like the ensemble gave it all they got, but it seemed like it was written & shot too quickly.

My movie group saw SoS two weeks ago. It was my choice (my tag in the movie group is: The Weird One.) I liked it OK, but it's not even slightly comparable to the DVD Collection here

SoS started out fine but Gael's character became almost unwatchably annoying as it wore on.   Lots of imaginative scenes though.

I had Science of Sleep sitting on my DVR for a while and then erased it, because I was put off by its first moments, which struck me as painfully self-consciously fey.  Am I gathering I was too hasty, as long as my expectations aren't too high?  I do like Mr. Garcia Bernal (or should that just be Bernal?).  I did not, however, particularly like Eternal Sunshine, and not just because of Jim Carrey.

Sarah, it should be Mr. García Bernal. Most Latin Americans go by their paternal and maternal surnames (in that order). If you were to shorten his name, it would be just Gael García or Mr. García (or Sr. García).

My movie group

Not to derail the thread, but I must say that this is the first time I've heard of a "movie group" (perhaps I was raised in a cave) and wonder what the setup is -- same as book club, where everyone scrambles at the end to read the book and then has finger sandwiches at a stranger's house? Sounds like a genius idea.

It's a tight group of 4, including myself, with infrequent occasional guests. We see a film together every Wednesday night, almost always on DVD. The person who selects the film each week rotates throughout the group. We found it easiest to keep up with by just doing it alphabetically. Every second or third week, we have dinner together before the film. While guests are invited and welcomed, you only get to select the movie if you sat through an entire rotation. Most guests are uncomfortable with the uncertain nature of what could show up (a recent rotation included Inland Empire, Knocked Up, Eastern Promises, and Masked And Anonymous.) The group of 4 has been doing this together really regularly for about 12 years. My personal picks usually have a theme for the year, so in 2006, I brought Oscar winners from the 30s and 40s, in 2007 I brought low-brow comedies, this year I am trying to go with surrealism.

It's really just an excuse for people who like each other to get together and try to keep up with film as much as possible. No big agenda, no assignments afterwords.
