N.Y. governor reportedly in prostitution ring
N.Y. Times says he told advisers; statement expected shortly

NEW YORK - Gov. Eliot Spitzer has told senior advisers that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, the New York Times reported Monday.

Spitzer was scheduled to make an announcement Monday afternoon. Spitzer officials wouldn't immediately comment on the story.

Spitzer is a first-term Democrat and former state attorney general. He is married with three children.

Details about the prostitution ring were not immediately clear.

But last week, federal prosecutors in Manhattan filed conspiracy charges against four people accusing them of running a prostitution ring that charged wealthy clients in Europe and the U.S. thousands of dollars for prostitutes.

The Web site of the Emperors Club VIP displays photographs of the prostitutes' bodies, with their faces hidden, along with hourly rates depending on whether the prostitutes were rated with one diamond, the lowest ranking, or seven diamonds, the highest. The most highly ranked prostitutes cost $5,500 an hour, prosecutors said.

The Times reported that a person with knowledge of Spitzer's role believes the governor is one of the men identified as clients in court papers.

The case is being handled by prosecutors in the Public Corruption unit of U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia's office. Garcia spokeswoman Yusill Scribner said the office had no comment.

Spitzer has built his political legacy on rooting out corruption, including several headline-making battles with Wall Street while serving as attorney general. He stormed into the governor's office in 2006 with a historic share of the vote, vowing to continue his no-nonsense approach to fixing one of the nation's worst governments.

Time magazine had named him "Crusader of the Year" when he was attorney general and the tabloids proclaimed him "Eliot Ness."

But his stint as governor has been marred by several problems, including an unpopular plan to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants and a plot by his aides to smear Spitzer's main Republican nemesis.

Spitzer had been expected to testify to the state Public Integrity Commission he had created to answer for his role in the scandal, in which his aides are accused of misusing state police to compile travel records to embarrass Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno.

Spitzer had served two terms as attorney general where he pursued criminal and civil cases and cracked down on misconduct and conflicts of interests on Wall Street and in corporate America. He had previously been a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, handling organized crime and white-collar crime cases.

His cases as state attorney general included a few criminal prosecutions of prostitution rings and into tourism involving prostitutes.

In 2004, he was part of an investigation of an escort service in New York City that resulted in the arrest of 18 people on charges of promoting prostitution and related charges.

First Phil Leotardo, then Cloverfield, and now this? Looks like the Big Apple's got some worms in it, kiddos... (Hey, maybe I can finally write that hard-boiled detective novel I always knew I had in me!)

It's time for Anthony Weiner to step up and CLEAN HOUSE!

My wonderful state. It was so nice of the Gov. to employ all the hookers that were left idle when Times Square cleaned up. What a problem solver.

This makes me a little sad.
I was hoping he'd be offered US Attorney General by a Democratic Executive. It's a sick sad world.

Yeah, he tried to clean up Albany, which has been horribly corrupt (in a bipartisan way) for years, and my guess is, they hit back hard.  This was stupid of him, obviously, but not too bad compared to what Joe Bruno and Sheldon Silver have been up to since like the 70s.  If Mike Bloomberg went after them, billions of dollars notwithstanding, you'd find out he was gay in mere minutes (whoops, did I type that out loud)?
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

This news about Eliot Spitzer raises some very serious questions about the governor's judgment and decision-making.  Why didn't he just get on the internet, or find some cathouse somewhere, like any normal guy would do?  Am I right, people?

(Seriously, though, I'm expecting to hear this basic joke in various forms from several late night talk show hosts and Bill Maher over the next several weeks...)

It looks like his trying to hide money tipped off the IRS, which led to his downfall.  I think hookers are pretty sleazy, but not too much worse than lots of other vices we accept.  But Spitzer is guilty of what a lot of prosecutor types are:  moralizing about drug use and vice crimes that they themselves indulge in.

I greatly enjoyed this letter when I first read it, which is on a similar topic:

I think these politicians' attitude is that they know that *they* can handle hookers and drugs and whatnot, but the little people need to be controlled.
