I hope that future high-schoolers will be forced to watch this mini-series - not just because it's excellent, but because they'll all laugh their asses off during the beautifully shot premature ejaculation love scene.

i think that was tangible proof to abigail adams that john did not touch or even look at another woman while he was alone in paris.

should i watch this?  I have watched about 10 minutes and find it terribly boring, but the part I saw was a trial.

it is kind of boring... it's extremely dry with a lot of talking and not a whole lot of action (john adams seems to always be arriving after the battle happens if not missing it completely).  the characters are what make the series for me. i was skeptical of paul giamatti as john adams, but he has won me over.  laura linney plays a sublime abigail adams and the rest of the founding fathers like ben franklin, thomas jefferson etc. are vivid and dynamic and the politics and friction between them is fascinating to me.  but then again... i read the mccullough book a few years ago and was really into that era of american history when i was a kid. i find it rewarding but it's not for everyone.

I like it (I've seen the first 3 episodes), but I don't know why they feel the need to tilt the camera as much as they do. Do they think that spices up all the scenes of people talking or is it some sort of homage to the old Batman series?

That "sickness" scene at the end of episode three went on a bit too long, but I think the rest of the miniseries is awesome so far. The guy who plays Jefferson is great too.

I like old-timey costumes and buildings.  This is why I like the show.

I like it a lot but agree with ChrisF. I think you have to bring some existing interest in that period of history to this or it won't be your thing. That said, after this series is over, I'm cancelling HBO.  There, you've been warned HBO.

I just watched the whole series over a week on DVD.
Loved the first half - all the separatism stuff and seeking to get independence. The courtroom scene in the first episode. T-Wilks as B-Frank. Loved all that.
Once they got independence, it got a little less interesting for me. All the politicking and rivalries etc sort of dragged.
And the last episode, as Dorv said, was pretty harrowing. I didn't think they could do gnarlier than the leg-cut-off-with-chainsaw, but sho'nuff! I'm glad the breast removal was not shown onscreen too heavily.
Plus I appreciated the direction from Tom Hooper, who's currently shooting my most anticipated film of 2009.

I liked Tom's recounting of the events of July 4, 1776 on the recent classic podcast.  The band of four American adventurers who stormed the shores of Britain and killed the king.
