Searching for Bootlegs
« on: April 10, 2008, 06:28:30 PM »
Did people on the chat tell Tom about the primary source of good bootlegs online? The one that insists on having absolutely no compression and makes a point of banning anything officially released or of questionable origin?

I'm pretty certain he only wants the physical items.  Most of those Beatles bootlegs, there's no way you could really want the music on them.

True. There are a few gems, but most of them are bad recordings or just "let's listen to 60 takes of the bassline to Paperback Writer". I just wanted to make sure!

That whole ting was confusing to me for a bunch of reasons

Even IF you want the physical tapes etc

Why not put up an Ad on Craigslist or Ebay?

For the same reason you don't buy your vegetables from potentially disreputable sources online. You gots to be in front of the stuff. Make sure they're not CD-Rs or some weird rip-off deal. Ebay has the stuff if you dig around for it, but even the scummiest of bootleggers throws you a discount for dropping some coin, and the prices on Ebay are NUTS for good stuff. And the prospect of putting out a request for bootlegs on Craigslist sounds like an invitation for pure horror.

I'm shocked at the silence I got from people about this - nobody knows anybody in the NJ area selling 'fan club pressings' under the counter? Maybe my audience isn't scummy enough!

Tom.

Tom--do you know what you're looking for, specifically? Or is it more of a "I'll know it when I see it" sort of thing?

I don't think the audience is (w/ a few exceptions) old enough. Maybe Tom could record a request to be played during Glenn Jones. .

We're scummy in, um, a different way.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

There was a store in the Village called Second Coming Records. They did sell bootlegs.
I bought a Cheap Trick and Gang of Four bootleg there.

Not sure if they are still around.

Wait, you're not supposed to do that?
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Could probably point you in the direction of anarchists or something, but Beatles bootleggers, not so much.   ;D

Wow, I never thought I'd hear those words from Tom.
I'm warning you with peace and love.
