Pineapple Express...
« on: April 19, 2008, 10:56:58 PM »
So last night when I went to go see Forgetting Sarah Marshall with some friends I saw this trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ07JO-SaBc

does it annoy anyone else that Judd Apatow and his friends just keep churning out movie after movie, or anger anyone that David Gordon Green is directing this?!!??

This trailer got me really mad.

No, not really. I like my anger to be more constructive. Like, for example, there's this Thai place down the street from my house and I usually go there for pad thai because it's always really delicious and perfect. BUT. Today I went there and it was SO SPICY. Spicier than normal. Waaaaaaaaay too spicy to be as enjoyable as it usually is. And that made me angry, because, you know, you should be able to expect consistency from a place called The Golden Turtle, I think. Don't you?

[I realize that looks really sarcastic, but the only way in which I am kidding is that I don't think that's actually very constructive. That is also maybe not as relevant as I might have thought it was originally, but I'm going to keep it in because I think it's a pressing issue.]

To answer your question better: no. Plus, and again I don't mean to be a jerk or anything, I'm just curious--If Judd Apatow movies annoy you a whole bunch, then why were you paying to see one in the first place? Or am I a total idiot and he didn't produce Forgetting Sarah Marshall?

jeeze.... yes he did. i was kind of dragged there by my friends.  it's not that i hate judd apatow so much, it just seems he's becoming the danielle steel of comedy movies and the fact that david gordon green is directing it seems like he's selling out.

I brought this up a couple of weeks ago, I called the show to say Judd Apatow should take a break for awhile. mostly out of the risk of getting over exposed.

for the record i love his films and think this is going to be the comedy of the summer.

but seriously, anger? really?? this offends you to the point of anger? come on.

I find myself annoyed by Judd Apatow too, but I think it's just my stupid tendency to hate people once they become popular/successful. I don't think his movies are perfect, and they're usually overhyped, but I enjoy them. That Pineapple Express trailer looked especially good - the foot stuck in the windshield driving down the highway made me laugh out loud.

Team, you are a little bit ridiculous.  You're angry that DGG directed that?  Why?  He's been talking about branching out for a while now, and even if he hadn't been, I don't know what's so awful about him directing Pineapple Express.

I think Judd Apatow's movies so far are pretty underwhelming, but I actually don't think he's "churning [them] out."  It's just that now that he's had some success and has a little clout, he's able to get his friends projects finances and distribution.  Good for him, I guess.  I liked Superbad a bunch.

Give DGG a break I mean the man just came out with a throughly depressing flick in Snow Angles let him show that he does have a sense of humor.

I think judd a. takes these dumb generic ideas and makes the best possible movie that can be made out of them.  It's a bit of a strange specialty, but ok.

DGG made 'George Washington' - in my eyes, he can do what he likes.

That looks good. Apatow has kept his streak up as far as I'm concerned. As long as he keeps churning out funny stuff, I don't care how often he does it.

How was "Forgetting Sarah Marshall?"

Forgetting Sarah Marshall was just fine...

maybe my problem with Pineapple Express is that David Gordon Green's films have always been intelligent and thoughtful and the subject matter they've dealt with may seem simple on the surface, but when he gets a hold of it he turns it into a film you can go back and watch again and again and see things that you didn't see before.  With Pineapple Express I'm afraid he'll leave that behind and want to direct movies that are purely a way for people to escape reality, not films that will have people talking about it after they leave the theater.  If he wants to branch out and experiment that's fine, but I'd hate to see him go mainstream, gain acclaim for directing a really funny stoner comedy rather than something that's a little more intelligent. Is that fair to say?

Yes! I saw that a few nights ago and was blown away. (which I'm guessing means apMike would find it "instantly forgettable.")

Just kidding, Mike!

Why don't you reserve judgment until AFTER you see the movie?  You're clearly a fan of David Gordon Green; give him the benefit of the doubt!  Maybe he saw something in the script that appealed to him and thought he could make a fun movie.  Im sure if he REALLY wanted to "sell out" (a phrase that means less and less to me as years go by) he could have made "Step Up 2" or something.

I don't know who any of these people are and I haven't seen any of these films.
