So,  the caisson disease was caused by the compressed air in the caisson that was required to equalize the pressure from the water to keep the walls from collapsing. I still say it's the pressure, not the depth. In this case it's just that the pressure isn't just in your lungs, it's all around you.

Well there ya go, question answered.  I think I got the notion from the Ken Burns documentary on NY -- I probably didn't know what a caisson was because he wasn't doing a slow pan over a sepia-toned photo of one during that bit in the narration.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Absolutely it's the pressure, Andy.  I haven't been arguing against that.  It just doesn't have to be water pressure is all, since you can get the bends from a plane decompressing too rapidly.  I think, in the case of water, depth is only relevant in that the pressure increases as one descends, which presumably would cause more nitrogen to dissolve in one's blood, thus increasing the amount present to form bubbles and also making for a bigger pressure change upon rapid ascent, which would cause that larger amount of dissolved nitrogen to form said bubbles.

yes, but the only reason you would have the pressure is to keep the extra pressure of the water out.  if you were digging straight down into the dirt, I don't think you would need the pressure to keep the walls from caving in.

did I tell you guys that we  booked a dive trip?

I think that's right.  You could just build supports.

Actually, we're rising too quickly.

One more thing about this: I read "The Great Bridge" by David McCullough about five years ago and he said that The Bends was first documented because of the men who died working on the Brooklyn Bridge.  And it was the air pressure.

David McCullough wrote it and therefore it is true. Case closed.

David McCullough . . . said that The Bends was first documented because of the men who died working on the Brooklyn Bridge.

If you're saying he said that was when the term "the bends" was first used, fine.  If you're saying he said those were the first documented cases of the ailment known as the bends, then either he was wrong or you're misremembering.  My money's on the latter.
