What do they do with the extended quotes in live shows?  I've been wondering about that for some reason.

This new album doesn't cut it for me.  It sounds like their primary influences are those Walt Whitman Levis commercials and the Hold Steady.  The first album had much more of a noisy/garagey feel, with more energy and less (though still a noticeable amount of)  self importance.

The spoken word endings don't do much for me but I really like the album. The sound might be a little different but I don't think that's a bad thing. Look forward to seeing them next week.

There is a passing mention of them in this article by Walter Benn Michaels, but it seems to single them out as the future of rock music in recession or post-recession America.

I disagree, but that's why they call them opinions. I loved their first album as well, but I feel like the new one is much stronger and more focused. And when they sing their songs, you can sees they mean it, which goes a long way for me.
But, for those that like them, here's a clip of them that I shot.

I'm going to see these guys tonight and I'm pretty excited.  Let's Wrestle are opening; I feel like a number of people here would dig their record, though that's probably already been discussed.

At work we're only allowed to wear tshirts if they have library/book themes on them. I can get away with wearing my Titus Andronicus shirt because I can say "Hey, it's Shakespeare!"

"The Monitor" is a good album. The Hold Steady comparison is apt, IMO.

Hold Steady are good. I'm warming to the album bur I much prefer the much more raw sound of the first.

I will seeing them tonight. A very Jersey-centric weekend (saw the Screaming Females and Ted Leo and The Pharmacists last night).

Those are totally scrapped.

In the live setting I think both albums work very well together.

I saw them last night at Toad's Place Upstairs. The band was great, as were The Babies, but the place was small and the sound system was terrible. The first band, described as one who "mixes 90's indie rock leanings of bands like Guided by Voices and Superchunk with more driving punk sound that has garnered them comparison to bands such as At the Drive-In, The Trail of Dead, and Bear vs. Shark." was, while musically competent, stunk. And they did not sound anything close to what they were described as. They skewed more towards early-2000s "emo-pop-punk" bullshit. The crowd was drunk and awful. I was "standing" (basically just trying to stay on my feet and upright, with all the pushing and shoving) next to some kid who, it felt like, had six bony elbows. My whole arm is sore and bruised. I had some drunk girl try to climb over me like I was a wall. FOT Brendan's (aka methanolcereal) girlfriend punched me in my side once the moshing started (although I don't think it was with malicious intent). I ache. Connecticut stinks.
