Guitar Shop
« on: May 03, 2008, 07:20:53 PM »
hi!
i need help. are there any big guitar superstores (SUPER) in the NYC area that aren't Guitar Centre? all my google searches just bring up small rare guitar shops, and i don't need drop $25,000 on a Gibson right now  :o
i'm looking for danelectro guitars, if that helps.

p.s i have never been so confused by a place as manhattan.

top 3 things seen so far: "drug peace" protestors outside the united nations building (no official response as of yet from Ban Ki-Moon), a gang of drunken irish males brawling outside a bar at 3pm (oh, how my eyes welled with pride) and someone who looked like Uma Thurman but wasn't. And someone behind her who looked like her stalker. But wasn't.

So Cow, there are some decent places in Greenwich Village where you can still get a good deal if you're willing to spend some time looking and haggle a little bit.  Just get off at the West 4th Street stop (A,C,E or B,D,F,V) and wander around.  The specific place I have in mind is on Bleecker, close to 7th Ave. South (I don't play, but my wife got a good deal on her guitar there), but I can't remember the name offhand.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

I was always partial to Chelsea guitars, on 23rd street for window shopping. not big, but they (had) some amazing stuff.

ACTUALLY - forget that: they have been "forced to relocate" according to their website.

here's a thread on the matter:

maybe Sam Ash? they're pretty much just a local version of Guitar Centre, though/

If you're just in the market for a Danelectro, I'd check eBay, it's where I bought mine.

But if you want to test things out with an amp....last time I was in the neighorhod (7-8 years) ago, 48th Street in NYC had about five guitar shops on either side of the street, each with large variety of new and used. It was like guitar heaven. If you can find Sam Ash, you should be able to explore the other smaller shops nearby.

Main Drag in Williamsburg has a fair selection and in my experience beats Manhattan prices (at least when it comes to basses).  Nothing beats ebay right?
