I've never seen this show but I've heard so many good things. Do I have to watch it from the beginning or can I just fire up random episodes from Adult Swim?

It does have a progression. I'd try to start with anything from the first season at least.

Something I noticed in that preview video:

1) The OSI is apparently developing into a parody of GI Joe
2) OSI colonel Hunter Gathers is based pretty heavily off Hunter S. Thompson
3) The commander of GI Joe is named Duke...
4) ...as is Doonesbury's version of HST

I'd recommend watching the Steve Austin/Sasquatch episode. It gives a flavor of some of the over arching elements but is hilarious on its own. If you like that, start at the beginning... there's only two seasons worth of material and they are both Netflixable!

Did I miss something, or did the third season leave something to be desired?  It was still better than mmost stuff on tv, but, man, it was pretty weak.

I loved the episode where the Scooby Doo gang was reimagined as famous criminals (Fred being Ted Bundy is genius).

I think they started to take the backstory too seriously and the humor (what made the show so great, IMO) was put on a second priority because of it.

I think that's it, but they also seemed to just phone it in a bit.  The writing seemed lazy, like if they threw enough back story at us, we wouldn't care about anything else.  Or maybe they were just tired of doing the show.

Want good news? In the AVClub's interview with Jackson Publick a few weeks ago, he completely agreed with you.

A Wes Anderson directed Venture Bros movie sounds like a really bad idea, at least to me.

Anyways, good news about Season 4 being less backstory heavy.

I think the best person to do a live action VB movie would be Sam Peckinpah.
