Tom Waits as an actor
« on: May 21, 2008, 03:05:49 AM »
I totally agree with Tom about Tom Waits as a musician but Tom Waits as an actor... that I can go with. I've liked everything he's been in (that I've seen). I'm looking forward to the Terry Gilliam film that he's in that the shovel wrote about today.

I think he's a great actor. Short Cuts and Mystery Men are my two favorite movies.
It ain't ego, it's my love for you.

Sure, but there's not much range, there, you know?  Even in that Batman movie, he was still just kind of "doing Tom Waits."
Kinda like Scarlett Johansson, now that I think about it...

well, yeah TL, you're correct but it's still a good movie.  I guess he does a good job kind of playing himself.  I didn't like him as Renfield in Dracula though.  A bit too Tom Waitsy maybe?

I like Tom Waits in 'Coffee and Cigarettes', and 'Fishing with John'.
But in both of those, there isn't even the pretense of a character, he's straight up being himself.

Every episode of "Fishing With John" is super classic.

My favorite part of Tom Waits' "Coffee and Cigarettes" segment is Iggy Pop pretending to be as dumb as a post.
I'm warning you with peace and love.

So Scarlett Johansson would be "doing Scarlett Johansson?"  I bet that movie would do pretty well.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

Save the toilet talk for FOTchan!
Seriously, though - she's basically the same character in every movie, as well.  I would assume that that means she's just "doing Scarlett Johansson."

That character of course is a really hot blonde with a 3 pack a day smokers voice. It's all been down hill for her since Ghost World.

As I've said before, I enjoy Waits as a musician, an actor and a comedian, although he does get a free ride from critics and tall-bikers.

Short Cuts is my favorite Altman flick, by far.

I think of ScarJo as the Sofia Coppola of acting. I don't get it.
