Assistant circulation manager position at School of Visual Arts

Job Description: Assistant Circulation Manager (full time)
Hours: Tues.–Thurs.1:30pm–9:30pm; Fri.11am–7 pm; Sat.10:30am-5:30pm.
Summer: 10am- 6 pm, Monday through Friday
Salary & Benefits: Low to mid 30K’s. Includes comprehensive benefits
package.
Reports to: Circulation Manager
Scope of Position: Supervises student staff during evening and weekend
hours; handles student worker schedules and payroll; manages damaged
books and bindery shipments; contributes to special projects including
library displays and space planning.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Supervises 16 part time student staff, including two student
circulation managing assistants who are responsible for overseeing the
library when circulation management is not available. Conducts
interviews, hiring, training, project assignment, and reviews of student
workers and managing assistants with circulation manager. Coordinates
with circulation manager to set priorities and goals for student
workers. Reminds and updates student workers on changes to policies and
works to keep active communication in department through circulation
staff meetings and circulation blog.
• Is responsible, together with SVA security guard, for closing
procedures weekday evenings and Saturdays. Has primary responsibility
during evening hours and Saturdays for fire alarm and other general
emergency procedures. Communicates building and security concerns to
library director or associate library director; prepares incident
reports as needed.
• Oversees the maintenance of library collections and ensures that all
circulating materials and reserves are charged, discharged and shelved
efficiently. Interprets library policy regarding overdue items, fines,
and lost materials. Supervises the re-shelving of materials, book and
other collections.
• Schedules student workers for the semester. Maintains paperwork and
hours for student workers, submits timesheets for all work study student
workers in the library and submits part-time student worker hours. Keeps
statistics for all student workers and managing assistants to help with
personnel budget planning.
• Conducts circulation daily duties: balances cash drawer till and
processes checks. Generates email notices to patrons and answers email
questions regarding lost or misplaced items and renews items via email.
Puts holds on and takes holds off of patron accounts. Assists
circulation manager with final library clearances for potential graduates.
• Assesses damaged books with associate library director. Supervises
some in-house book repair by dedicated student worker(s). Organizes
shipments of more seriously damaged books to bindery as needed.
• Orders all stacks and circulation-related supplies.
• Assists circulation manager with organization of circulation area and
public library spaces; contributes to general library facility planning
as determined by supervision.
• Other special tasks and projects as determined by supervision.
Qualifications:
• BA/BS Degree (preferably art or humanities related)
• Highly responsible & detail oriented
• Experience supervising and training entry level staff and student staff
• Excellent interpersonal and problem resolution skills
• Very good verbal and written communication skills
• Patient and cool under pressure, with ability to be firm with
difficult patrons.
• Experience with Mac & PC computing systems
• Previous library experience desirable
