The Strand - Reviews section
« on: June 16, 2008, 02:04:12 PM »
Hey people,

I feel a tad dim about having been in the dark about this section of The Strand, but in the basement there's a Reviews section where new books are located - they're copies that were sold to The Strand at a reduced rate by newspapers and magazines who received them from the publisher for reviews.

I got this book "My Stroke of Insight" brandy new hard cover for $13 - the cover price is $25.

Isn't that awesome?!

(I know they're free at the library but city libraries kinda creep me out, sorry to say)

anyway, just wanted to share.

i just thought it was cool that literally blocks away the same book was selling for $25 at Barnes & Noble.

V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!

I love that place.

And yeah, public libraries around here tend to have a dude in a trench coat facing every wall.

This girl I know works at a public library in a bad part of L.A.  Recently they had a problem with homeless guys fucking each other outside on the side of the building while using mayonnaise as lube in broad daylight.  That's right: Midday Mayo-Fucking.

Is there a word, in English or another language that describes something as being terrible and tragic, yet completely hilarious at the same time?

My mother works at the library in Westport, CT.  Even in that somewhat upper-crust town, the library has homeless-fucking problems. If mayo's involved, my mom chose not to tell me.

As for the Strand, I have to admit, I don't like the place. I find it overwhelming.  I totally understand why people love...it is more a problem with me than the store.  I have been in there probably 20 times, and I have never bought anything! I freak out! I like my book stores tiny...like my men.

My favorite? Mercer Street Books:

That's a great place too.

And I totally agree with being overwhelmed in there. I have to spend five minutes just drifting around and getting my bearings. It's cramped and it's not the cleanest "drift" but by then I've thought of something I'd like to look for or I've seen something that's interesting.

I also experience a similar Record Store Amnesia. I'll walk in some record store, see the endless cd spines, and suddenly forget what kind of music I like.

i know what you mean, JFM and Spoony.  every time im in LA (no homeless "midday mayo-fucking" sightings yet), i venture into AMOEBA and walk out empty-handed or with LPs i immediately regret purchasing (because i think of what i originally walked in there for, but left without).

Boy, all this talk of urban U.S. libraries makes me regret my strident suggestion in another thread that iAmBaronVonTito should just go to his local library to read a book he can't afford to buy. Sorry, Baron! If my local library were full of condiment-fucking homeless men, I'd avoid it too. As it is, it's merely occupied by your garden variety heroin and meth-addicted homeless men. That's OK by me - everyone needs a place to hang out, right? Just leave your mayo somewhere else!

Does that make them hobosexuals? Also, surely it's Midday Bum Fucking.

I'M SORRY. SOMEONE HAD TO SAY IT.

Although your pun is clever and funny, I still think the mayonnaise element is indispensable when speaking of this action.

I went to the Strand last year and wasn't too blown away.  Mostly because it was super crowded and smelled like BO.  I did pick up a few awesome books, so maybe I'm just being a naysayer.

I went to a famous DC bookstore  (Politics and Prose) the other day, and it was almost as good as the average Border's.  Almost.  Like it's just famous for being famous.
