Favorite Firefox Extensions
« on: June 18, 2008, 12:13:19 AM »
To celebrate the release of Firefox 3.0, name your favorite add-ons. They're what makes Firefox great!

Greasemonkey (obviously)
PicLens
FireGestures
SageToo
OpenSearchFox
Googlepedia

I don't know any of those, Gilly - what do they do?

I like:

Autocopy - highlight something and it automatically ends up on the clipboard
Download statusbar - no annoying additional windows, everything sits in the statusbar
DownThemAll - perfect for grabbing big downloads
IE tab - for those sites that are still Firefox-unfriendly
ImageShack toolbar - perfect for instant uploading of images to ImageShack
AdBlock Plus - obviously
URL fixer - if you happen to write www.friendsoftom.cmo, it automatically changes it to .com for you!

I like Downthemall, IE tab and Adblock as well

Greasemonkey- The best extension available. Install it and then go to userscripts.org to find scripts to make websites better. My favorites are Facebook and Google Image scripts that enlarge thumbnails to full size when you mouse over them.
PicLens- Really cool extension that lets you scroll through (like Ipod coverflow) Google Image, Flickr, Youtube, and a bunch of other sites. This one is only going to get better.
FireGestures- Lets you use your mouse to gesture to do anything Firefox is able to do. For instance, I hold right click and move my mouse to the left and it goes back a page. Hold right click and move mouse down to bring up bookmark sidebar. It's all customizable.
SageToo- RSS reader
OpenSearchFox- Right click on any search bar and add it to your search bar in your navigation toolbar (the Google search)
Googlepedia- Adds a Wikipedia entry to Google search on the right hand side.

I like M3U Ripper, but it's not compatible with 3.0.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

I like Better GMail, from the Lifehacker crew - it makes that site look less clunky.
Also there's a LiveBookmark addon, but that's not FF 3.0 compatible yet.

EDIT: How could I forget the Smart Bookmarks Bar? Easily my favourite.

I would think they're not standard because they're for more advanced internet/computer users. My parents use Firefox (at my insistence), and they like it, but I think that all the extras would be a little too much for them. So, all these cool add-ons are there for those who want them.

-Web Developer Toolbar
-DownThemAll
-Del.icio.us bookmarks
-Adblock Plus
-NoScript

The one I am really looking for, but just have been too lazy to find, is where you highlight any text the right click and it automatically looks the word up on M-W.com or Wikipedia

I just realized I could do this a few days ago: if you hover over a jpg or other image online, your cursor becomes a hand and you can drag that image right to your desktop or photoshop or whatever. This might be native, or it might be the screengrab extension that renables this. No more right-click>save image as!

it would be cool if they were already built in, but just had to be "turned-on" by ppl who wanted them.

No, it's all third party which is what makes it great. New stuff is being developed all of the time. The reason it's not standard is that each app makes Firefox use more memory.

I also like the dictionary that points out misspelled words.
Better Gmail and Better G Reader are both great

I don't understand fire-gestures.
Breakfast- I'm havin' a time
Wheelies- I'm havin' a time
Headlocks- I'm havin' a time
Drunk Tank- not so much a time
George St.- I'm havin' a time
Brenda- I'm havin' a time
Bingo- I'm havin' a time
House Arrest- I'm still havin' a time

I'm surprised nobody mentioned ClipMarks. You just highlight any text you want and it gets saved, then you can go get it whenever you want and organize the clips and stuff. Like a folder of clippings. YEAH BRO
