North Jersey (not New York!) suggestions
« on: July 01, 2008, 10:51:13 AM »
I'm visiting North NJ over the three day weekend.

Despite living my first 17 years there, my actual NJ experience in limited to mostly Monmouth and Ocean counties.  Only on visits have I seen some actually pretty cool places, like Lambertville and Morristown.

On the list

* friends

* abandoned law firm or such full of books my friend is dealing with as part of his work-- he said it just looks like the guy up and left one day

* flamingo diner

* montclair book store

* I put in a probably scary-seeming request to Terre T to see if I could sit on on the Turbo Fruits this Saturday-- we'll see how that goes

Anything else?

I generally avoid NY except for specific excursions but if anyone knows of anything I'd be game.

Really? There's not a whole lot to see now that the guy with the weird eye is gone. Plus, the new waitress isn't very good.
See God, Kai

I was just hoping to see you eating one of the three meals a day it is reported you eat there.

Seriously, I'm all about diner suggestions, if you have any others.  That's just the only one I know the name of.  Diners are one of the top things I miss about NJ, yet when I visit there it often never occurs to my friends that that's where I'd want to eat, not some fancy place.

If I had a time machine, I'd go back in time and visit the Pulaski Skyway tire fire.

edit:  Also thinking about the Yogi Berra museum.  Yeah, not many sightseeing opportunities suggest themselves.    I guess the Sonic Youth/Feelies show filled up in minutes, too bad.

There's a new waitress?! My world is shattered.

Diners -
Nevada Diner, Bloomfield
Tick-Tock Diner, Clifton
Arlington Diner, North Arlington
Colony Diner, Caldwell
Nutley Diner, Nutley
Ritz Diner, Livingston
Eagle Rock Diner, West Orange
Oh, if only the Clairmont Diner on the border of Montclair and Verona was still around - you'd be psyched...

Pizza -
Angelo's, Bloomfield
Napoli, Bloomfield
Vinnie's, Bloomfield
Cosimo's, Bloomfield
Bella Napoli, Bloomfield
-OR-
Get a Focaccia from Giordano's in Silver Lake (an area that straddles Bloomfield, Belleville, and Newark - I'm not actually sure which town it's in) - Sinatra used to have their rolls flown out to him in LA - unbeatable!

Veg food (and one Thai that leans veggie) -
Veggie Heaven, Montclair or Teaneck (Taiwanese all vegan)
Udupi Village, Montclair (all veg South Indian)
Brookside Thai, Bloomfield  (ummmm... Thai)

Now write me a receipt so I can tip on outta here...

Any suggestions for pizza places in Bloomfield?

edit:  All those places make nondairy pizza?

Well, yeah - for the last 11 years, I get 'em without cheese - my recommendations are based on sauce and crust.

Seriously, though, thanks for the suggestions!  A friend of mine just bought a house in Bloomfield, so I'll check out at least 2 of these.

TL, any opinions about Six Brothers on Rt. 46?

Also, may I use this in a play someday, Mike?

I keep a notebook of overheard lines, and it might actually be the best line of dialogue I've ever encountered.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

By the way, if I had more time up there I'd be sure to try to meet up with some FOTs.  Very FOT-dense region.

JG, you're not off the hook for your Denver trip, though.  Cheese sandwich and a thermos of hot black coffee, on me.

I will be in Denver in February 2009 unless I fuck up royally, which is generally somewhat likely.

See my other thread.
Plus, if you like hiking the Pyramid mountain area in Boonton area is really pretty, and has short/doable but not boring hikes: http://www.morrisparks.net/aspparks/pyrmtnmain.asp
And lately I have been really into Thai House Rock http://www.nj.com/entertainment/dining/index.ssf/2008/05/thai_eatery_puts_the_kitsch_in.html
It is super cheap and very small, only 3 or so tables.  The owner is so nice and it is the best Thai food I have ever had.  Plus, the decor is records/LPs.  CUTE.
