Whether he likes it or not, Jay Leno's got a date for his final Tonight: May 29, 2009.

NBC today set the calendar for the funnyman's mandatory retirement as part of a timetable for the network's rejiggered night-owl plans.

Heir apparent Conan O'Brien will be installed as Tonight Show overlord on June 1. O'Brien will abdicate his Late Night desk in the spring, most likely March or April, and move from New York to Los Angeles to prepare for his new duties.

I love the New York element of Late Night, but Conan in LA sounds promising.

Leno has become increasingly annoying in the run-up to this year's election. Any political joke that falls flat or causes booing prompts him to get all self-righteous and say something along the lines of "see now, the audience is wondering if it's OK to laugh at that." Yeah, that's what they're doing.

Doesn't hold a candle to Conan's audience-uniting "Yea/Boo" song.

As far as I'm concerned, the sooner Leno is gone the better.

Here, here.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

Oh, we haven't seen the last of Leno.  He'll either betray NBC or start some dumb weekly show or something.

Leno's been insufferable for so long, I have a hard time remembering when precisely it was when he didn't agitate me.  Probably when Carson was still on air, or shortly thereafter.  Conan essentially kept "late night" television alive this past 10-15 years, as far as this young man was concerned.

Conan is hands down the best late night talk show host.
