I voted for Robert, as I've long enjoyed his antics and professionalism, as well as sympathized with his obsession regarding games of sport.  I'm also a big supporter of the Jicks, Pig Lib is a new millenium classic to me.

Oh, and Hello All.  I figured I'd jump in here since there are some recent openings.  I'll just be filling in where needed at first, but management has promised me a more solid position in the future.

Pig Lib was a play-non-stop-til-days-turn-into-weeks record for me.

I went with Young.

Also, any poll would find this to be true: Preston School of Industry's "All This Sounds Gas" is better than anything by SM and the Jicks.

I would dispute this claim.

It may be equal to the first Malkmus solo joint, but all the other Malkmus records are much better then that record.

Its not like I'm a royale or anything.

Yeah, Malkmus may not have the underdog status, but come on... Pig Lib is fucking awesome, Face The Truth is Excellent, and the other two both have good songs on them.  I'm a huge Pavement dork, obviously, and i never even bothered to get that Preston School of Industries album.  Come on, man, the guy wrote like 5 out of 300 Pavement songs, and as much as people want to throw Malkmus under the bus, Spiral Stairs is the primary party responsible for all those The Fall comparisons.

All right. I'm backing down. You win.  Pig Lib is better.

But if you should ever see that PSI cd at a used record store, check it out. I think it's pretty good.

wow - a real blast from the past. i remember beavis and butthead having a field day w/ this one..

my vote goes for steve west - based entirely on the fact that i know he is the sole breadwinner for his dozens of children (as depicted in the video for "painted soldiers.")

Hey maaan, what about Nigel Godrich?  He was, like, the 6th member on their swan song "Terror Twilight".   That album included greats such as "Platform Blues Jam" and "Simmer Simmer Simmer Down".
"Animals Tour" -  :-\

I saw Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks a couple of weeks ago.

It was great, I got right up front.

I know people diss him for being a "slacker", but I love his loose casual stage presence.  He was being funny, making fun of Fleet Foxes for not showing up to the gig.  He gave props to the Raptors for signing Jermaine O'Neil!

The Jicks are really tight which allows him to relax and have fun. (I think)

As far as I'm concerned, this is a tough battle, but I'll vote with my heart.

What is the criteria here?  Is it the non-lyricist member we like most?  Or who contributed most to the songs?

C'mon JJ2.0, detail matters!

Okay, I voted for Nastanovich.  It was between him and Gary Young.

I think Gary Young contributed more to the sound of the band than any of the other guys on the list, but Nastanovich was like the glue that held them all together (until Gary fell off, then he held steve west on maybe?).  Even sans-Young, he brought the weird.  The weird that could be harnessed.  A more disciplined weird than Young's, but a weird nonetheless.  He was also a total mensch to Malkmus' brooding snob during a painful 120 Minutes interview with Lewis Largent (both guys were awesome in this interview as good-cop, bad-cop; Malkmus disgusted with Largent's quesions, Nastanovich engaging Largent to sing "November Spawned a Monster" with him), and he was the band accountant.  So I voted for Nastanovich: Percussionist, Hype Man, Muse, Bookkeeper.

I guess that's all I ask, Matthew S.; that you follow your heart.  What's more important to YOU: sonic contribution, or emotional contribution, or good-looks or what?

Fair enough.  I too voted for Bob Nasty.  Mensch is apt, indeed.

I'm not pointing any fingers, but I always felt that those who lamented GaryYoung's departure from the band simply missed someone at whom to laugh ...

Nastanovich.
The clip of him drunk and playing air guitar along with AC/DC from the Pavement dvd is what put him over the top for me.
