Can I get a decent comedy?
« on: September 12, 2008, 06:36:48 PM »
Has anybody seen a decent laugh out loud comedy lately? Because, I haven't. I'm resorting to watching the bottom of the barrel 80's teen comedies (I watched Private School last night on Netflix...) to get my comedy fix and I'm ashamed to admit that I even resorted to watching Drillbit Taylor a few weeks ago. The genre is in a sad state right now, don't you think?

It's hard find anything that ain't middlin' (looking at you W Ferrell). I know I can always resort to my Strangers with Candy or UK Office or and It's Always Sunny... DVDs, but I'd love to see a new series or movie that makes me laugh.

I laughed pretty hard at Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I like Apatow stoner comedies, what can I say?
Haven't seen Drillbit Taylor, but I don't really want to because Owen Wilson really, really bugs me*

*unless, for some strange reason, Wes Anderson is his director. He killed as Eli in RT. The "General Custer" line gets me every time.

I also actually liked Forgetting Sarah Marshall. But Drillbit Taylor is horrible.

A lot of major critics have trashed it, but I think Burn After Reading is the funniest movie I've seen all year. It's the best kind of comedy: stupid people who think they're smart, running around and fudging things up. I can't wait to see it again.

My grade: A-
It ain't ego, it's my love for you.

How about Baby Mama? I laughed but not that much and that's about what I've come to expect from a comedy (not dramedy) these days.

I watched Baby Mama the other day, and I thought it was funny in spots, but otherwise very bland. Amy Poehler is great though.

I thought Baby Mama stunk. Aside from a few good lines from Dax Shepherd, Steve Maritn, & Amy Poehler, I feel like every single joke was in the trailers.

i kinda have to agree

ever comedy i saw this summer was disappointing.

and i saw forgetting sarah marshall two weeks after being dumped, i think a lot of the funny was lost on me.

the dracula puppet musical was amazing though, i'd pay just to see that.

Did anybody see stepbrothers? I'm very sick of Will Ferrell's schtick, but the trailer made me cackle.

I just got back from Burn After Reading.  I loved it.  It was slow at the beginning, but once everything was established, it was just what I wanted out of a Coen brothers comedy.  I guess it was just about what I expected too, but so what, I wasn't let down at all, and it made my day.
